Best source for brake discs & pads
« on: 28 October 2015, 08:24:41 »

So I've got the "Check Brakes" message on the car's SID and looking at them it's pretty clear its a genuine fault and not a dodgy sensor. Not to mention that although the pads have been changed, according to the service history, the discs appear to be originals (12 yrs and 63k)  :o.

So, where would be the best place to buy them? Are they the sort of thing that should be VX only? Eurocarparts have the pads at £20-25 and a pair of discs at £40-50. Also, I don't have ready access to Trade Club, but I'm willing to have a go at getting one if it would be worthwhile, cam belt and water pump are due over Christmas so might be worth getting one anyway.  ;D

Disc and pad set is about £110 from VX...

Sounds alot, but halfway decent discs will be £40 or so each with vat, plus another £15-20 plus vat for pads... So actually not alot in it for going genuine :y

If you can go genuine, it's not so easy for me any more. Only dealer that does trade club is halfway between my home and office. So I've been using ECP or AGP a lot more recently.

If you go ECP, I've been using Pagid pads on the rear, been happy with them  :y

Thanks Harris, may take a look at that, although £110 does feel like a lot for discs and pads.

Tunnie: Thanks, I've not previously had any problems with Pagid when I used them so may look at those.

On a separate note, does anyone know how long the warning message tends to kick in before the pads are totally shot? I'm hoping to limp through to Christmas (about 500 miles' use) with them so I can use the parents' excellent workshop facilities (as opposed to my own rather cramped single garage and sloping driveway.

The sensors tend to be very generous, usually fair bit of meat left on them  :y

Avoid Pagid, in the last 6-9 months the quality has fallen off a cliff

Hard to say how good a pad is unless on the front, or heavy use of TC.

I agree with DTM, Pagid seem to be shite now. Maybe like other once quality makes, they do a cheap, shite one. Or ECP up to their usual games  :-X

To the OP, best general purpose brakes without doubt are genuine or TC. Tried and tested, Nobody has found anything better (without modified brakes), and reasonably priced on TC.

I have recently fitted, new pagdid discs, and tc pads, also have tc pads in the rear, and find them suitable.
As Tb says best value without modified. :)
