OK, some up-to-date; this evening I took cam covers of the left bank away and found that also the spark plug area of the first cylinder from front in that left side was full of that brown something. I also checked the numbering. So I can confirm that first No. 1 and then No. 2 are for some reason brown. What is it all about I do not understand. But no worry. After compressed air etc. I could easily remove spark plugs and can now continue with assembling new covers.

Sorry for the late input, but as its is a V6, why not identify the cylinders from the numbers on the the coil pack i.e. 1 3 5, or 2 4 6? They are easily visible without having to remove anything. I always understood that the lowest cylinder numbers in most cars were at the front of the engine and the highest cylinder numbers at the gearbox end.
