Rust around spark plug V6 Y26SE
« on: 03 November 2015, 11:17:26 »

Just changing cam covers+seals. Found that in right bank first cylinder in front there is a lot of rust around the spark plug. Also the spark plug steel part is corroded. Everything is very dry, no oil no water. Other spark plugs are OK. Is there in a head a steel bushing with thread for spark plug which perhaps is slightly leaking coolant or is the thread in the aluminium alloy head itself. Strange looking. Engine is running nicely.

Rust staining comes from the coil pack... normal if the car has had water getting past the coilpacks from the scuttle... have a look at the underside and you'll soon see :y

Is the rusty plug cylinder number 6 by any chance ::)

Only if number six is the first plug at the front of the right hand bank.

OK, thanks for comments. So perhaps all ok. I was a bit afraid of this as I did not know the construction. Thread for spark plug is then in aluminium alloy head.

Yes, first syl. from front right bank, whatever number it is, have to learn the order.

Driverside or passenger? If rhd driverside then it's 1, if right as you face the engine, ie passengerside then it's 2 :y

Difficult to follow this discussion but in Finland we have right side traffic so steering wheel is in the left side of the dash. So it is first syl in the passenger side. First means closest syl of the cam and outer belts.

Number 1 then :y

Almost certainly staining from the coil packs, and probably from previous ones at that... given that it is running smoothly :y

Don't all Haynes whenever referring to RH / LH of things universally measure this as if facing forward in the driver's seat? Obviously tricky (and sometimes infuriating) when you're stood in front of the engine bay and told things like 'disconnect the airbox, found on the right hand of the engine' etc...
