Part of me wonders if this is some level of powerplay - ie:
"Dear Mr PM, I am Mr Beds Police, we need £1mill, can we have it?"
"Dear Mr Beds Police, No"
"Dear Mr PM, Oh, please. Or we have to sack people, We do that and the public will just moan at us for not doing enough Policing"
"Dear Mr Beds Police, Yeah. Shame innit?"

So... make a policy that will directly conflict with Cameron's pledge to end the war on motorists, to make public the cuts (which I'm sure no top brass Coppers actually like) and get the public in uproar. Hopefully then Downing St will say "Oh, go on, then, this is silly, makes you look like you're moneygrabbers, and we've lied about an election promise. You can have the £1mill"

I suspect not, however.

Out of interest here's a list of the vehicles run by Cheshire Constabulary (maybe/possibly/probably?) completely different in number/size type, I don't know, really.

Vehicle Make and Type   Qty   Age range in this group
Vauxhall Astra 139   1 - 7 years old
Vauxhall Corsa 186   1 - 7 years old
Vauxhall Corsavan   6   all around 10 years
Ford Mondeo   16   1- 4 years old
Volvo V70   21   3 - 7 years old
BMW 530   23   1 - 3 years old
BMW 330   1   1st year
BMW X5   9   1 - 5 years old
Mitsubishi Shogun   2   5 years old
Mitsubishi Outlander   1   1 year old
Ford Focus Estate   10   1 - 5 years old
Ford Ranger   1   6 years old
Ford Transit   23   1 - 10 years old
Transit Connect   25   1 - 8 years old
Mercedes Sprinter   17   1 - 10 years old
Yamaha FJR 1300    12   2-4 years old
VW Transporter van   2   7 years old
Landrover Discovery   4   up to 10 years old
Landrover Defender   1   15 years old

No idea if any Police on here could shed light how this differs from force-to-force? For all I know Cheshire may be really good at keeping their vehicles for many years, maybe they're typical, maybe they're unusual. I have to say I was surprised at the age of some of the vehicles, in my head I perceived most Police cars being 0-3 yrs old.

Interesting they've kept the Defender the longest, and then the Disco. It's not directly related to purchase price, (there are more expensive vehicles on that list)so says something about the longevity/reliability/access to parts, and the little Corsavan!

DBG, I recall with some amusement that a county up north a few years ago purchasing several greed cameras, budgeting for the likely revenue from them covering the cost within a year, then sheer profit all the way from then on.
However, they were SO disappointed to find that people were doing what the authority claimed that the cameras were for and actually obeying the speed limit!
Result? A big defecit in their finances and an authority shown up to be mendacious, money-grabbing sons-of-bachelors!

Found the link...

Like I've said, I suspect whatever most of us read in the press is going to be far, far from the truth (as someone who saw the Fire Brigade strike first-hand) I'm not surprised this is wrong, Jason.  :y Just the best I could find.

Jason, can you give us a clue where things stand with relative ages of vehicles? No idea if it varies from area to area, too?

TBH DBG, I don't know anymore, its used to be 3 yrs or 140,000 miles for the advanced cars, 120,000 pandas, but since all the austerity measures kicked in and we changed from Volvo to (Broken Multiple Ways)! Ahem!!! things have changed some what. We're seeing 200,000+ regularly now and when they break, they really breakdown. Can't really speak for the Hyudais other than they are crap, and we've recently changed supplier  ::) ::) ::) to.......well........ I'll let you guess that one  :o :o :o :( :( :(

Other forces, well can't really say, much of a muchness, but bigger forces have more and small forces have less.
