My first journey after satisfactorily fixing the power steering, and the TD has developed another problem. Anything above 2000 rpm the car emits clouds of black exhaust smoke and distinctly lacks power, with a 'roaring' noise from the engine bay. It is still driveable, but almost as if in limp mode above 2k rpm. I suspect it might be turbo failure.
Any thoughts?

Check all pipework from the Airbox to the turbo for splits before anything else Shack 

Maybe a small split opening up under vacuum / pressure

Thanks, had a quick look when it happened, but no sign of leaks, needs an in depth inspection.

as tg said, check all pipe work.

also whip the pipe off the turbo compressor and feel the pin that attaches to the compressor for play. lots of play is bad and is possibly sucking oil from the bearings back in to the intake. if so new turbo time.

Easier than that, pop under the car and remove the turbo outlet pipe (clean air side) and check the spindle, there will be some movement and check for oil in that area.

On most of the ones I have seen its usually the air cleaner to turbo pipe that's split or popped off or a pressure pipe split or popping off.

When a turbo goes its a very distinct howl !

In fact I would go a stage further and say it cant be turbo given the symptoms.

The anti smoke on these power plants is based around the MAP sensor and engine revs, so the MAP is happy that enough air is being pulled through to allow plenty of fuel to be injected.

Hence something is either causing boost to be lost post the turbo e.g. a split or EGR stuck open.

and the smoke would be blue, not black as op states. get ya paws on it and check it

Additionally, you'll be pleased to know that turbos on those engines are pretty robust, esp if car has been well maintained.

I suspect you've forgotten to do up an intake pipe, or broken something related.

Exactly what I thought, as I have just had the (new S/H) i/c fan off to free it up, but only had to undo one pipe, however I think I remember tightening up its jubilee type clip, but will double check tomorrow.

Thanks for all the input guys. I've never played with  turbos before, and I don't even know where it is on the TD. It must be somewhere under the OS given the pipework disappearing down there.
