Doctors and old people
« on: 17 November 2015, 20:21:42 »

Sort of a humorous story.

My dad has suffered with painful ankles for years. Not all the time. It only comes on at bedtime or in the night and not every day. When it strikes he can't sleep and it is pitiful really as nothing relieves it. At one time his GP prescribed EIGHT paracetamols to be taken together before bed but thankfully that didn't work. The GP says there is nothing that can be done. Last time I wanted to go in with him but he said he wouldn't go if I went. Fair enough.  Doctor says " we have had this conversation before, what do you expect you are old (89). I can't refer you as they will just say there is nothing that can be done". The same doctor by the way recommends my dad walks a mile a day, which he does.

I have found a private specialist at York and hope to persuade him to go with me next time. I bet they would do something if it was Prince Philip. ;D

If he has painful ankles then something must be causing it. Old age is not a medical condition.

Gout would be an obvious suggestion if the pain is enough to keep him awake :-\

Harris, I think you are on to something there. I have just googled the symptoms and treatment.

I'll cut and paste into a document for him to digest and take in with him a week on Friday to ask the doctor if that is what may be the trouble.

Thanks

A wee blood test will confirm gout or not. If it is, I swear by Naproxen. Turns my big toe from feeling like it's broken to pain free in the space of 20 mins. Poor old boy, he shouldn't be suffering and losing sleep.

Hope all gets sorted soon.  :y

+1 for naproxen. It's the Heineken of NSAIDs, imo.

My 95 year old aunt swears by them

Just remember with Naproxen to either always take it with food or with a proton pump inhibitor if the use is long term, if you value your insides.

Morello cherries I think. Always works a treat and no worries about adverse effects.
