Omega 2.5v6 tappet noise
« on: 14 December 2015, 19:50:45 »

Hi all

Over the last couple of days, I've noticed a distinct 'clattery' noise on start up, but as the engine warms up the noise disappears. It appears to be coming from the nearside of the engine.

Is this the start of something major?

is it due a service? Sounds like a couple of oil changes could make a difference .... assuming it's a sticky lifter rather than one that's on borrowed time .... they're usually just sticky.

Had the oil and filter changed 2,000 miles ago.  Next service due in 3,000 miles.  I don't do a big mileage now (about 3K a year) and try to make sure it gets a good blast when I use it.

What oil did you put in on the last change?

Had a tappet type sound on start up a few years ago, use one of these LINK each oil change and it's much improved to the point I don't hear it anymore. Recommended generally by OOF members an all, while some think it's snake oil.

Wynn's Hydraulic Valve Lifter
Suitable for petrol and diesel engines.
Restores efficient working of hydraulic valve lifters.
Lubricates and releases sticking valves.
Reduces valve train noise.
Restores lost power.
Is safe for use with catalytic converters and turbochargers.

Sounds very much like what a good oil does :-

Typical Oil Product Description:-

It is designed to minimize wear to help maintain performance like new. It helps protect against sludge and varnish under high stress conditions, keeps contaminants away from critical engine parts, performs in extreme temperatures and helps keeps your engine in top condition. It is a complete engine oil and is recommended if you drive a more modern vehicle or simply want an outstanding oil for your car.

Excellent low temperature capabilities for rapid engine protection at start-up
Low frictional properties for fuel economy
Extremely low oil consumption reducing the need for top-up
Excellent thermal and oxidation stability to help prevent sludge build-up and keep engine clean

The oil put in at the last change in July was 5w30 semi synthetic.

When I started it up this morning, there was a noticeable reduction in the 'clattery' noise but as before, was soon purring along as usual, but I will get some Wynn's valve lifter tomorrow.

Going into the garage next Tuesday just to make sure.

Has anything like this been used?

Wynn's Engine Flush
Use the Wynn's Engine Flush Petrol and Diesel 425ml prior to an oil change and it will get rid of the build up of sludge and other contaminates from vital engine parts with ease. For use with all Petrol and Diesel engines of vehicles and stationary equipment.

Beware of using engine flush, especially if the car has a history of poor oil servicing. It will dislodge a lot of crud in one go and potentially block the oil pickup, wrecking the engine.

Best thing to do is a few oil changes at 1k mile intervals and/or the lifter treatment only.

I definitely wasn't recommending it, just seeing if it had been used.  :y

Hi Guys

The ca is a November 2000 CD 2.5v6.  Done 133K, but in excellent condition.  Always serviced on the dot and anything that needs doing gets fixed quickly, although it has been superbly reliable.

Still running fine, and the noise has gone.  Doesn't use much oil at all.

My garage man (one man band) who I've been going to for over 35 years advises no need to use any oil additive.

Not having a bottle handy, what's the recommended timeframe to leave it in for, prior to said oilchange? Or will no damage be done if left in for 1000s of miles?
