Fuel tank fell off(!)
« on: 24 December 2015, 11:30:08 »

This is a new one for me. One of the straps holding the fuel tank in place broke yesterday on my omega estate. Fuel tank still hanging on one side, but pretty much dragging on the ground on left side! Had to abandon car at a nearby friends house. Seems pretty cramped up there with trailer coupling and all.  >:(

I once experienced a Capri tank falling off completely due to rusty straps.

At least the straps are easy to make if you can't buy new ones.

Considering where most fuel tanks live ... in the wet & sh1te underneath, you'd think that the extra few quid for stainless straps would be worth the expense.

Cheap and easy enough to replace :y tow bar isn't in the way if it uses the official mounting points ;)

Most cars are scrapped with the original straps, so it seems an unnecessary expense to me. And being sheet metal they're easy enough to replicate.

At least it's only the straps & not the tank itself. Many many moons ago, I was filling my Dad's Cortina estate in Pompey ready for the trip home when I could sudedenly smell petrol as the floor started to get wet. The filler pipe on the tank was parting company from the tank due to tin worm, at least a lot of tanks are now plastic so won't go the same way.

Had to replace a Sierra tank due to the top disolving to a rusty mush... only found out because I put more than a tenner in it ;D

Have a Mk2 Granada tank due to the tank on my last one threatening to go the same way... got scrapped before I got around to doing it... double doh :-X ::)

And horrifically slow in XR4 format. Though the weight of the stupid ironing board does marginally improve traction over standard ones :)
