Recently my 530d has been making a nasty noise upon startup. It only does it 50% of the time and only when you STOP cranking eg when the engine starts and you stop turning the key


To make it clearer to hear on this video I stopped the engine from firing

What do you make of this noise?

Sounds like either starter motor slow to disengage or drive plate issue if auto ,may be neither

Drive plate crossed my mind but there is no noise when running or stopping the engine or going between drive and reverse etc

Starter. Can't think of anything else it could be.

Sounds like the pinion clutch slipping as the engine catches, probably because the starter is not retracting the pinion overly quickly (hopefully it is retracting it and its not staying engaged)

Seems pretty common, both the ones we had here did it.

We used to call it the bendix, don't know about now.

Spring is usually knackered.

Mr. Stemo, I could be wrong but I don't think it is done that way any more, but I am deffo old enough to remember the mBendix and its foibles!
On my Austin A30, it often uset to spin the pinion but not engage in the ring gear, due to sh-you-know-what on the shaft; the technical cure wat to take the jack handle and a hammer and give the shaft the benefit of yout anger.......that pre-dates Basil Fawlty!

You're probably right, Ron. Some new fangled pre-engage system now....probably.

When it eventually decides it doesn't want to release at all, the noise, smoke and bits of starter will definitely make you wish you'd changed it sooner.

Unlikely, the Bendix setups used to as they basically crashed the Bendix into the ring gear where as the modern pre-engaged starter is much easier on the ring gear because it engages before applying motor power..



What its doing to the 'over run' clutch is anyone's guess!

Been there, done it, always cured it. Or maybe its just our A30's like being assaulted

To me James, it sounds like the £1 coin dropping into the reject tray because it won't start !!!!
