Road Tax Confusion.
« on: 17 July 2008, 18:39:52 »

I was under the impression that from next April I would be paying £440 road tax for my late 2001 2.6. But after looking at Parkers it would appear that the rate next year is £300.

Has the government had a change of heart regarding the road tax, or have Parkers got it wrong?

Richard.

it's staggered over the next few years i believe, so you will end up paying 400, but maybe not when you buy the next tax disc

having looked at other sites, it appears parkers would be wrong, rates as from 13th march 2009 for cars reg'd between march 01 and march 06, is £440 for over 225g/km

2010 rate is £455 :(

£440 is the figure that I believed to be correct for 2009/10. Indeed that was the figure that Parkers were showing until quite recently.

The official government site seems to support this figure.

However I found this on the AA site:

The Treasury has said but not officially confirmed that cars emitting over 226g CO2/km but bought before Budget 2006 will move into Band K in 2009/10 - and will continue to benefit from a reduced rate, and only in 2010/11 will these cars be placed into the band that corresponds to the car's actual CO2 emissions.

Perhaps this statement (true or not) is what has prompted Parkers to change the rate from £440 to £300.

£440 rising to £455 is a rip off.
But i will still keep my miggy,as to replace it for a smaller car of the same age would cost me serious money. It's very possible that the government will have to make a U-TURN anyway. :-* :-* :-* :y

Yet....

The Government are losing so much credability, (if they ever had any after Blair), that they will never get back into No.10 at the next  election.

Whether the Tories or Lib Dems will be any different, who knows. My opinion at the moment is that they ALL tell Joe Public what they want to hear at Election time but very rarely care out the sales pitch.

What would happen if EVERYONE refused to vote  :question

OK, another point - my 2.5TD is listed as enhancing the environment with  214g/km Co2... does this mean that I shall be paying £300 a year tax? Or is it different ruling for diesels? Or does it just affect the newer cars?

Im not sure on this one  :-/

On vehicles registered before March 2001 the Co2 emissions are irrelevant. There are only two road tax brackets, one for cars up to 1549cc, the other for 1550cc and above.  Your 2.5TD will obviously be in the higher of the two brackets which according to Parkers means you will be paying £185 in 2009/10, and £200 in 2010/11.

Just had a wiked idea!

Someone slap me if this has been mentioned before...

Why dont all high tax band car owners cash in their tax just before Feb 09 and then buy 1 year tax at todays rate, then you'll always be a year behind the tax increase!

Mine renewal is Jan 09, so i'll leave it i think.
