What does multi jet mean re engine size please.
« on: 18 July 2008, 15:29:36 »

Just popped into my Dad’s and he was showing me one of his motor home magazines, under engine size colum some engines were described as 100/130 or 160 multi jet where others were the usual 2.5 / 2.2 whatever.
Noticed that it was all Fiat vehicles, anyone know what this means?

Neither of us know what that mean's but I said I would be able to find out from oof. ;D

So have I got this right :-[ All fiat engines are physically the same size, whatever that may be and the difference in overall power omes from wether it is 100/130 or 160, can this be compared to the more normal description of size or have I missed something obvious :-[ :-[ :-[

Is it cubic inches. I think 60 cubic inches equals 1 litre (1000c.c)
Could be wrong though.

So roughly speaking 100=1.7 litre
130=2.2 litre
160=2.7 litre   all figures rounded up.

I reckon it's power output.

That's along the lines of my thinking, the article does not explain sizes / comparisons. And these are motorhomes so will not have high bhp in general. :)

Surely power output BHP. would not come under the heading "engine Size" I still think it is cubic inches.

Multijet is a technique associated with common rail diesel engines where they fire the injector more than once during the combustion cycle.

The theory is that when you have over blown them with a turbo to get max bhp that you can recover some of the lost low down torque by spreading out the power delivery on a  single combustion by squirting small amounts of fuel multiple times into the cylinder.

I suspect that the 3 figures are indeed bhp figures.....probably on the same block with the same cc
