Would like some help if possible, My father in his late 70's drives a T reg Discovery think its a TD5, over night the power steering has failed completely, the belts are all tight and there are no leaks and fluid is up to the top in reservoir, It's virtually impossible to move the steering and there is no noise, I've tried turning the wheels fully both ways (now my arms are like popeye!) but it's solid.
maybe i'm being a bit suspicious but it happened not long after it had an MOT where they fleeced him for £400 for what was listed on the mot certificate failure was a spongy brake pedal.

It is however an old vehicle and I struggle to get much sense these days from my father, could anyone suggest an obvious thing or something to look for that I might of missed? I don't want him to get robbed again!

Slacken the joint to the steering box then disconnect it and check its not the UJ gone stiff (seen that a few times on LRs) this will also show if its the box internals collapsed.

The steering will be heavy with no PS but it should still be steerable.

Have a look in the power steering bottle when the engine is running,you should be able to see the fluid circulating,if you can't see movement suspect the pump has gone tits up,if fluid is going around system then probably the steering box( if that Disco has what looks like two power steering reservoir caps then its the front one you are concerned with as the other cap is the ACE system)

Hi thanks will look at both of those if I can gain access to it again this week, need to get a detailed service/repair manual first so I'm looking at the right bits, also its a typical landrover so there's oils and stuff oozing out of every where!

Hi I was struggling to undo the nut so didn't try that but instead I took off the Aux belt and turned the pump pulley which seemed to be very free wheeling no resistance so me and my mate think its the steering pump, does that sound plausible?

Hi only one reservoir and nothing looks like its circulating but I've been told that can be common unless engine and all is hot and on an old land rover this take a while!
So I took belt off and checked resistance on pump there literally was none so I would really assume the pump is the issue, my local garage seemed to play that down though maybe to cover them selves if it turns out to be steering box, I need to get some quotes and see what my dad wants to do, if I didn't have a baby due anytime soon I would have a go myself as you only have to remove fan cowling and a couple of bolts it seems

Being an owner previously of land rovers (2 x td5's) if you don't have circulation in the bottle I'd be putting it down to buggered steering box internals.

I've been told that if there is no circulation to look at the steering pump so I'm getting a lot of conflicting advice but thank you, I have a new lead to test.

There is also often a filter in the bottom of the res on the outlet which connect to the pump, seen this clogged to.

Will check that on Monday thank you, Ive also been told by Paddocks in Derby to undo the bleed nipple on the top of the steering box with engine running and fluid should gush out if not it confirms the pump

Well that's not a given, as if the fluid is not getting to the pump (e.g. the filter or delaminated pipe etc)
