more knocking
« on: 27 February 2016, 18:03:17 »

hi chaps,

have recently had new wishbones and new drop links and new struts and new hub carriers and new track rods,

and although it handles much better and is softer on the bumps I still have a very annoying knocking from the front,

it is okay on soft bumps like speed humps but on general rough uneven roads seems to set of this knocking noise,

are there any other bushes that may need replacing on the front that I may have missed or any think common that could cause this.

all I wont is a knock free ride  :(

Poorly torqued drop link nuts can cause knocking, as can worn anti roll bar bushes.

The most common knocks from the front are: drop links ; anti-roll bar bushes ; wishbone bushes ; strut top mounts

are great very helpful info,

and also at the risk of looking stupid does the rear have drop links, and could these to cause knocking at the rear.

I am determined to get it right  :y

Actually, I should have also mentioned wishbone ball joint too for the front  ;)

Rear anti-roll bar has very short link bars but I can't think of ever hearing anyone replacing them.  Crossmember donut bushes, exhaust and shock top mounts are the main culprits for knocks from the rear.

Yeah, you should be able to rule that one out.

Do you get a knock/rattle on relatively minor bumps or is it on speed bumps and the like?

Anything related to the anti-roll bar will knock away almost constantly, whereas, the strut top mount or wishbone related will only knock on larger bumps.

its fine on smooth roads and speed humps but on things like a badly worn tarmac road the knocking starts :y

Sounds like exactly the symptoms I had when the strut top mounts has "sagged". Open the bonnet and look at the large washer/disk on top of the strut - is there a noticeable gap between this and the inner wing?

Anti-roll bar bushes are 2 at the front and 2 at the back, neither are handed but the rears need the whole subframe dropped to get at - definitely a last resort!
