Litter- where did it go wrong?
« on: 04 March 2016, 12:02:37 »

A lot of us will be of the era when there was a big anti litter campaign - was it keep Britain tidy in the late 60' ? and we probably stuck to that.

I am always appalled at the amount of litter everywhere Uk and here in Spain. Two things that bug me are the folk who walk along unwrapping something (cigarettes, new phone, ice cream etc) and the wrapping just drops out of their hands. Who do they think picks it up? The other one here are the actual farmers (many claim to love the countryside compared to towns) . They have a litre bottle of beer at lunch and just leave the bottle propped up against a tree or a stone on their own land. Eventually it smashes. They also leave none biodegrable stuff like empty tuna tins and sometimes tidy up by tieing it in a poly bag and leaving it near a tree stump. Next day a wild animal has ripped it open.

I am not sure I like the tag clean for the quean but anything that tidies up our environment has got to be good.

What do you think? Is it another one of my I blame it on the parents?

Probably the parents and the society in which we live nowadays.

My personal hatred is people chucking their Maccy D`s crap out of the car window.

Walking the hound the other night a guy was stopped by a hedge on the estate emptying his rubbish/cans/ashtray etc INTO the hedge, on the opposite side of the road is a bin. :(  He got pretty upset and gave me quite a mouthful when I got out the phone and started taking pictures - flash was a bit of a give away - but when I included his registration plate he suddenly picked most of it up, dumped it on the back seat (why not use the bin I had shown him ??) and drove away at great speed ....  with that mentality we have no chance of a tidy country.  :(

I live down a small private (well, unadopted) road with a parking/turning area at the end.

One neighbour leaves his bins there all the time, as it's clearly too difficult to take them back to his house (he has the largest, longest drive and most parking available yet always uses the visitor parking..).  The bins are usually overflowing and so paper, cardboard and sometimes even food end up littered around the road - he's never made any effort to clear any of it up and it makes it look like we live like pikeys. >:( Drives me mad.

He also habitually puts the wrong things in the recycling bin so every month it will end up taped shut with a big label on it explaining what he's doing wrong.. of course it remains un-emptied until the bin men take pity and empty it anyway, and in the mean time he tends to pile his rubbish up in bags in the car park..

It's dog shit that gets people going up here. Loads of it in every green space.
Never used to be like that, folk were quite diligent in bagging it up and dropping it in the appropriate bin. Until the council decided they couldn't afford to pay anyone to empty the bins and took them all away. Now, if you're a good, law abiding citizen, you have to carry your poo bag all the way around the walk, because dogs invariably crap as soon as they're out of the car.

No litter bins or poo bins? Well straight away we can see one problem. What the hell is wrong with councils? What next can't afford to empty household rubbish bins?

They cannot afford these facilities because of a process known as virement - the re-allocation of funds from one budget to another. In the case of councils, it helps to pay for their inflated salaries.......

We have a guy in our town who has taken it on himself to clear the rubbish out of the local rive about twice a week, lets just say most of the cans have names on them that I cannot pronounce.

He post on the local forum a couple of days ago that he collect sixty pieces of rubbish from mile stretch of the river.

Similar here, by the river empty cans of beer I've never heard of, and burger boxes & other general rubbish .Such a shame used to be a lovely little market town 30 years ago when we came here, now ruined will move from here when SWMBO retires. Some people have no pride & no thought for others.

Tilbo, one of my favourite places to go and stare at the sea is Portland Bill, in Dorset - apart from in August/high season, it is quiet and unspoiled, which is why most people go there.
Why, oh WHY do the behaviourally-challenged seek to destroy the very things that they came to find with their litter, noise and unruly kids?

I find it totally sickening the amount of rubbish that is around the area where i live. I take my dog out twice a day one being 4am in the morning and it beggars belief what turns up from the previous evening. Its not just household waste ie black bags but its mattress its fridges its settees its every thing that fills a home. I for one hate it, and whilst never wanting big brother to watch over me would welcome more cameras to catch and prosecute these dirty individuals.
Where has peoples pride gone in where they.  :'(

Ron, I don't know the answer to the problem I have challenged people who do this some pick their rubbish up ,some hurl abuse at me but I can deal with that, I just wonder what this country will be like a few years down the road. We moved from South London to Spalding 30 years ago but now our town centre is worse than what we moved away from, and I realise some may feel I am being inappropriate but the Eastern European businesses are a complete blight on the town. The once tidy & pleasant riverside walk is littered with rubbish & the factory workers who are now mostly Eastern Europeans use the banks as a meeting place & a toilet. Can't wait to get away from here.

I speak as a man who has never dropped a single piece of litter in his many years on the planet... and also as one who dumped a girl for throwing a McDs bag of rubbish from his car window.
There is no excuse at all, its pure selfish laziness.
