As some of you know I now work in the east of London, driving the small combo van from appointment to the next etc .

My question is :  do cyclists have to obey red traffic lights like us motorists do ?

Time after time  when going through on green  a cyclist appears from the left or right totally ignoring the red shown to them .

From their reaction it would seem that I & of course other car , van  & lorry drivers are totally in the wrong in proceeding

through on a green light, while a cyclist wants to cross in front of us   

I was never "anti cyclist"  but crikey I am now  . . .as I feel it is only a matter of time before I wipe one out.

Another point is the cycle lanes in London . . . when I want to turn left , i slow down to negociate the turn , but cyclists in

their lane take no notice that I am turning left & just carry on straight across my path . I had to brake sharply yesterday &

very nearly got rear ended by a van following me .

So where do drivers stand on this subject  ?    can anyone advise  or is it as I imagine the outcome would be

 " hit a cyclist  = my fault  . . .end of "

Al, once you take licensing and insurance out of the equation cyclists are subject to the same rules that any other vehicle user is. Red lights, speed limits, STOP signs, signalling, one way streets, cutting across other traffic etc etc.


Your point about cycle lanes shows(yet again) just how badly designed and dangerous they are, and why many competent cyclists don't use them.


That doesn't excuse the cyclists who do any of the moronic things you mentioned.


Your worry about hitting one is justified. Have you considered your own dashcam so you can actually prove your side of such an incident?

Hi Al. I couldn't agree with you more about the "holier-than-thou" attitude and reprehensible behaviour of most cyclists, especially in London, where they assume Divine Right to do just what they please and f**k everyone else!
I was recently in East London myself, back to my roots, more or less, in Mile End, and was quite angered at the huge reduction in carriageway widths in both directions to give space to cycle lanes, stealing from motorists the road space we pay for and increasing our journey times and congestion.
As they have been given so much road space, it is now high time to issue them with number plates, tax them and make them carry insurance kike we have to.
The police/government are always looking for ways to make more money out iof us, so this offers them another line of revenue and if cycliste were obliged to register and display number plates, they would be accountable in the same way, too.
Although for the offences you describe, Al, there are penalties available (e.g. £30 for cycling on the pavement) when was the last time you saw a cyclist being stopped and fined?

exactly right there Ron  . .especially from Bow Flyover & along Bow Road into the centre of London  . . . Boris & his cyclist rule ideas  . . . it's all going against the motorist as usual

My question is this, why do cyclists blame us the motorists when they them selves cause a lot of the issues that cause concern.

Do they Pay insurance?

Do they have any certificate of bicycle worthness equivelent to our MOT

I had to pass a cycling proficiency test when I was a kid just to be allowed off the street.  We have to pass a driving test.

Yes I know there are good and bad riders out there like the same for drivers, I give bike riders a lot of space I just feel the majority of them dont care about anyone but them selves.

Saw some idiot yesterday cycling the wrong way up a one way street while he was texting on his phone. Unfortunately every driver missed him, and he was eastern European.

I'm not a cyclist and I know it's illegal,but I can understand cyclists using the pavements.Let's face it most if not all cycle lanes are poorly designed/executed so it has to be much safer for them.I do however wish they'd carry some form of warning device-bell,horn etc-and be more considerate to pedestrians as they approach from behind them.If using the roads they should obey all the rules pertaining to such useage.Unfortunately it's always the bad ones that are remembered and give all the rest a bad name,but this is true of bad motorists too.After all when was the last time anyone said "I saw a car/bus/lorry driver today,and he/she was driving perfectly"?
