Head gasket
« on: 17 March 2016, 20:55:38 »

I got a mobile mechanic in today and he said that the head gasket had gone.

Are there any oofers who can fix it? I can't take it to the garage obviously. I'd have a go myself but I'm not very competent with mechanicals. :)

Might help if you said which engine   ;)

Have a feeling it's 2.5 TD?

It appears common to crack head on them, it's not a nice job either on those engines.

Sorry yes, 2.5 diesel. Is it a massive job then?

Yup. Think you will struggle to find someone who would work on it, not very many 2.5 TD's HG's have been done.

Just seen your the other thread on the 3.2, my view is cut your losses and sell the 2.5 TD as spares and repairs. Buy another working example, they can be had cheap enough.

But I'd echo what Pete has said on that thread, you fix one up then flog it? Then buy another nail which needs huge amounts spending on it.

I personally feel a poor diag has occurred, given the BMW lump is know to have water pump issues it needs this checking as  a matter of course.

Hi Kate
I feel the same ,I never had any overheating problems I would use the car daily without any issues ,I think the stat may have been sticking but it never got hot.
As I told you I drove it home from its MOT fail and parked it on drive  you were the next person to drive it ,I dont see how H/G would fail unless you have been very unlucky , I would go for water pump replacment.

How did they diagnose a head gasket failure? Unless it has been seriously overheated, it should be fine, granted that the BMW diesels are quite prone to damage when overheated, mind.

It has to be worth checking the water pump and thermostat before condemning it?

Sounds typical of the motor trade. Quote for the most expensive outcome and, if you happen to notice that the water pump has lost its' impeller in the process, happy days! Saves having to actually think.

I changed the stat yesterday. Then I removed the water pump and the impeller had completely snapped off due to being plastic. There have been no symptoms of HG failure tbh. ::)

Well they are not finished yet, they need some more sanding but here are a couple of pics anyway:
