Goodwood 74th Members Meeting
« on: 20 March 2016, 23:05:48 »

Went to this on Saturday (Sunday was 'race day', Saturday was 'practice day').. despite the chilly weather it was a fantastic day out - a mini Goodwood Revival almost.

Great racing, glorious noises, up close and personal with the drivers, the cars. Wandering around the paddock as teams tinker with, rebuild, tear down and start up metal that I could never even hope to afford and you're close enough to reach out and touch it.

The noise of the GT40s as they began the dusk race was absolutely astounding - standing directly opposite the pit wall it was almost physically painful as the whole field went past. How racing is meant to sound.

When we arrived a chap spotted me admiring this - showed me around, chatted about it; it wasn't his, it was his friends and he'd popped back to get something.  When we got to the entrance the owner's first question was "Did you jump in?" ;D "Oh no", said I.. "Oh you should have!" was the answer. Great atmosphere..

Looks good. Always wanted to go but never got round to it.

Saw this accident posted . The car went down in the tunnel. Good job that there was no one in it at the time.

Ouch! Motorsport, as they say, is dangerous.

I love the relaxed atmosphere with barely a nod to the H&S brigade at Goodwood, hopefully this doesn't change that.  Speaking of; it was a cold day and there were fire-pits dotted around the whole event with warning signs that read:

"Do not set yourself on fire"
and
"This fire does not have a brain. Use yours"

;D

Sounds like a great day out, Aaron.

Is the blue car next to the TVR Vixen a Gordon Keeble?

Hm .. I'm not actually sure and I didn't get any more shots of that one sadly.

There was a lovely DB6 not far from us, too, as well as more modern expensive metal.

Apparently the post-event survey email asked what your income was; the upper band was "Above £500,000" and I can well believe there were many people there who fall squarely into that bracket.. some of the conversations you overhear are eye opening. Not to mention this: Legendary Ex-Marshall/Brock Vauxhall Bought… By A 14-YEAR-OLD

To quote the father of the new owner: "£82,000 is a bargain."

Gulp.

I'm old enough to remember 'Big Bertha and 'Baby Bertha' in period. They were (and still are) extremely quick.

Gerry Marshall was a fat ba...... rather large chap, but this didn't seem to slow him down much.

Here is a clip of Marshall in action to get the juices going. About halfway through there is an onboard lap of Oulton Park.

and a 1971 race in two parts for some reason from Crystal Palace.

A modest racing driver. Must be a rare if not extinct breed these days. :y
