Sorry to hear that.  I am lucky in that all my friends and acquaintances are safe and accounted for.

The father of a friend of mine was killed and her mother injured in the airport blast today. My friend had left for the US just before and will now be coming back from US. Don't know what to say.

We were both in Paris for business last week - I feel so sad
So sorry to hear that, Phil. I guess it's not real until it hits you close to home.

Ref Apple:

If you were a global giant with a cult following and you wanted to protect your brand while.not falling foul of the law, what would you do?

Concoct some public display while quietly giving some 3rd party you owe a favour to the details of how to maybe do what the court order asks you to do?   ::)

And ref encryption, there is no bunker.  There is only GCHQ.  The right encryption technique would require months if not years to brute force even with some massive supercomputer. By which time the information you were protecting is now worthless.  So for time critical messages you use encryption and everything else is passed on physically in person.  Good prevention comes from HUMINT. Don't believe me?  Look at the Investigatory Power Bill going through consultation right now.  All the hype is on the ISP logs but the key part is where start ups and tech companies can be forced to provide backdoors to British secret services under pain of financial ruin and jail time.  This says to me that we are reaching a point where the sophistication of technology is outstripping acceptable means to bypass them.

Try running a brute force on a triple DES with double key lengths and unique values in to a calculator and you will see what I mean.

Wish I hadn't started this thread... Some frighteningly xenophobic and racist comments, as well as some seriously worrying ideas for "security"!

Makes our future plans even more appealing ::)

I take about 40-50flights a year and have several friends who do the same.

As a group, events like this always hit us hard. Gave my folks a cal this morning just to tell them where I was (uk based). Although they tried not to let on I could tell how relieved they were.

In the end I will probably change what I do, especially once I have children. Which is sad, and some would classify it as "letting them win".

In the mean time, all I can say is we should try to not jump to overly simplistic conclusions about how people become radicalised, what radicalisation actually means and how you work to prevent it. However I'm guessing I'm wasting my digital breath here.

Belgium's Intel forces and organisation are weak and badly organised and unfortunately being taken advantage of by ISIS. >:( >:(  We have had 7/7 and been lucky since then but sadly that luck won't last forever.

Apple and alike need to accept that "Be you ever so high you are not above the law" - Lord Dennison Master of the Rolls. It is up to the politicians to draw the lines but this is going to take time and the terrorists will take advantage in the meantime. :(

You can thank the traitor Snowden for his help for the terrorists is disseminating US and Western world secrets which help the terrorists. >:( >:( >:( SIGINT is a vital first line of defense, with as Guffer said HUMINT playing a vital part but the leads and direction very often coming from SIGINT.

My thoughts and condolences go to the victims, their families and friends. :'( When I was at school a friend on mine his mum was killed in an IRA bombing, so it can get all too easily close and personal rather than just a statistic.  :'(

I know  bet that there is more of GCHQ underground then above  ;D

I'm nowhere near at the level you are on stuff like this but I believe your spot on there  :y
Its a shame the general public who go on about human rights wont understand what is really happening out there until the shit starts flying right on there doorstep  :(

I don't see any of those comments LD
I just see a lot of frightened people waking up to what the real world is becoming  :(

At the moment, Europe is the centre of this shite because we are soft.
We care more about what somebody else in the world thinks rather then saying opps it, lets protect ourselves  and 'dangle berries' to the rest of the worlds opinion.

As for you and your young family's future plans, I truly wish you all the luck in the world but I fear no matter were you go, this shite will follow you  :(

I also see no Xenophobic or racist comments either....

Ref : George Orwell..... don't the Police have a 'Stop ans Search' policy on all of us if they think someone is 'acting beyond reasonable doubt'....?

I know in my yoof I got stopped for nor good reason except the copper said they don't need a reason to stop me....

The Big Brother mentality we all have at the moment is actually helping our security services to find out who it was that might have shot or blown people up... Unfortunately we don't have the cameras that can suspect anyone of terrorist behaviour or shoot them on sight if they think they might be a terrorist....

Ok, lets apply that thinking... I think you're a terrorist, should that be grounds to slot you as you leave the house to take the kids to school?

Didn't think so :-X

On the other hand

I think your a terrorist and I have intelligence that gives me good reason to believe that ......
I turn up at your door knowing that you may be wearing a bodybelt packed with explosives and nails.
Experience also tells me that your group is quite happy to blow up yourself and any oppser around you because you believe that is what your god says you should do............
Contact is made as you walk out of your front door.
Armed officers are pointing various weapons at you ............
You start muttering something along the lines of "god is great" and reach for the inside of your jacket ............

Do I

a/.  Think about your human rights and what the papers will say and ask you nicely to put you hands on your head ?
OR
b/. Empty my weapon into your torso ?

Al (and everybody else for that matter) :)

This is not conventional crime / threat as we have known in the past.
Even the IRA didn't believe they were going to paradise complete with assorted virgins if they got slotted during the line of duty  ;)
These bastards want to die and take as many of me, you and our families and friends as possible  :'( :'(

I'm afraid conventional morals go out of the window when your life depends on it  :(

Shit world we live in isn't it  :(

Apparently third person filmed on cctv has been arrested. If indeed it turns out to be him then hopefully he'll be questioned further to obtain as much information as he may have which could lead to the arrest of others. From a personal viewpoint I know we have to show that we are "better" than these terrorists, but I'm afraid if we're to succeed against them then there are times when we're going to have to get down and dirty with them.
