Most back-street garages will be a reasonable £50-60 an hour, "specialists" nearer £100, dealers nearer £120.

I imagine in reality, it'd ne a couple of hours work, so by the time you have materials and VAT on top, £200 sounds about right for back-street....


As tunnie says, do springs in pairs. Always. Boge/Sach springs will be about £30 each, and easy enough to DIY in about an hour if you have a decent jack.

  a really good brake pipe flaring kit + cutting tool+ pipe bender & 7, 1/2mtrs of pipe + nuts etc with free delivery for less than £30. I already had an air bleeding kit so I agree £200 is excessive.

If you take off £20 for the materials(retail prices don't forget), that's less than 3 hours work. Which might be a bit much, but I haven't looked at what is involved.  If the middle pipe runs down the centre of the car and requires removal of the heat shields, then it sound pretty reasonable to me.


Or you could price up a four-post lift

Assuming of course that the pipes can be removed/refitted complete... iirc they run back to the bulkhead and down the nearside chassis rail... At some point one of them will cross the car to the osr and is probably routed up and over the diff.

Remove old pipe, flare new pipe & fittings.  £200 initially sounds expensive.

But how long is it going to take to remove old, flare and make up new pipe with fittings shape new pipe to fit tidy and correctly.  The equipment required to do the job needs to be factored in.  So whilst the cost of parts may be quite small I would say for someone running a garage it's not bad.
If you did the job yourself and was unlucky enough to trap some air in the ABS block (small risk), this can be a right bitch to clear you would wish someone else had done the job.

I stopped doing certain jobs because some people thought the job was expensive but hadn't got a clue what was involved.  Depending on the job I just say "I don't do that any more".

Not at all ..... just thinking that if he was a professional he could go on the list of possible professionals that I might take my car to when I don't want to get wet & cold on my drive    ...... Heywood is next door

It's the jobs for mates 

Welding was the biggest problem I would say, someone has a rusty sill small hole that's all (well that's all you can see) until you cut that much shit out to find good metal, 3" has turned into 12", that sort of thing. Then they say how much !!

Don't do welding now only for myself.
