How to. Help please:)
« on: 29 March 2016, 20:45:42 »

Evening guys.

Please don't mock. But we have a focus of 05 vintage that needs a near side inner cv boot fitting. I have never replaced one of these. What's the procedure in general? Presuming drive shaft out, inner joint will tap off, new boot and reverse of removal. Anything to be cautious of? Thinking needle bearings flying out everywhere but any info would be sweet :-)

Al is the new focus expert, although that one is a bit modern for him.

Inner joints are often an integral part of the driveshaft, so you will probably have to stretch the new boot into place.

Cheers Nick. If that's the case could I not take off the outer joint to get my new inner boot on?

TBH, most places just replace the shaft.

But yes, probably. But surely your place have got the stretchy fitter?

As in the cone? Yeah we've got that so should be ok. But occasionally if a stretchy boot isn't available we've had to get the joints off and mess about a bit.

I may well get ridiculed for this suggestion, but back in the days when I had a Renault 4  :-[ and needed to change the CV joint boots for MOT purposes, even though the joints themselves were ok, my then garage used "zippable" boots that could be fitted without disturbing the joints. Are they available for your car, I wonder? No idea who manufactured them, sorry........

I remember seeing that type of thing for sale as a "universal" fitting for sale in motor factors, not seen any for yonks though, but then it's not an item I go looking for.

If it's the type I think it is remove the drive shaft from hub, release the larger clip from the inner boot and pull the shaft out.  There's a joint with 3 bearings on that is held on by a circlip, remove the clip and you should be able to pull/tap the joint off. (pay attention to the order the washers etc are in). Remove the boot and reassembly is the reverse.
Oh be careful of the bearings they can full apart ( I normally stick a rubber glove or wrap tape over them)

Hope that helps (as long as I've got the correct type joint). If not ignore everything I've said.

Right then ladies. First off I got the wrong car lol it was an 05 corsa, not a focus.

It was a piece of pish. Drive shaft out. The inner was part of the shaft and wouldn't come off. As the boot was NOT a stretchy type I had to take outer joint off by spreading the circlip and knocking it off. New boots on and bands on. Job done. Thanks for all your input though guys 😀👍

It was a piece of pish.  ....

As is often the case .... by the time it's been discussed to death on a forum, the job could have been done in half the time!  ;D ;D ;D

Lol that's very true, Andy. And I think doing this 'professionally' I've learned to be able to work things out on the fly without having to have done the exact same job previously.

Though having said that I like to be armed with info cos that's just the way I am.
