Uh-Oh - A tyre thread!!
« on: 01 April 2016, 18:40:02 »

So my trusty steed the 2.2 is going to need new boots in the coming weeks, health check today found a screw in front tyre.  >:(

It's repaired but it was getting very low anyway, so it's bought me a little time. Current set are Khumo 31's which came on a set of CDX alloys I bought off PaulS in 2012, I've been very, very happy with these tyres for my needs. Excellent low noise, really are silent on a run, ample grip in wet and dry. Put them on at 155k miles and it's now on 188k, so can't really complain.

So what are the options for next? (225/55/R16) or could do (215/55/R16)

Local independent place who I'm trying, fixed the tyre for £20 offered some "Mohawk's" for £66 a corner fitted, but research suggests cheap Chinese crap. Their next step up were "Avon Z7's" @ £76 corner.

Blackboots at WIM suggested some shitty AutoGrips at £61 fitted, or Falken's at £86  ::)

I'm very tempted to try RobG's suggestion of these:

http://www.macctyresltd.co.uk/tyre-details.asp?id=20&Accelera

With fitting would be £74 corner.

To add into the Mix the 3.2 needs tyres soon as well, but I've got a set of almost knew KU39's from MotherT's old estate to go on the newer Elite rims on the 3.2

That would leave a spare set of older Elite alloys, which I could put on the 2.2. 17's do appear cheaper, need to do some research.

Any thoughts?

Stick to the right sizes, so don't be tempted by 215's just to save a few pence.

As to make of rubber, our needs differ too much for my recommendations to be valid for you.

But do stick to proper sizes.

Will do, current 17's stacked in garage from old Elite are right, being 235/45/17.

Tempted to pop those on the 2.2 as ready to go, then get new tyres for 3.2 over the summer.

I suspect that's because the 17s are probably newer stock.

Tyre prices are plummeting at the moment.

Even the most expensive tyres for the MV6 are £90 fitted.  Makes a (top end) budget like Khumo bloody expensive at £75.

I believe Omegas can with Michelin PS2 and/or PS3 as standard. For your driving style, I'd say these could be really viable - quiet, resistant to tramline, quite durable.....

Ignore WIM's online pricing, its rubbish.

If going for Michelin, go for Pilot Sport, not Primacy (eco 'dangle berries').  I only suggest PS2/PS3 because that was what GM fitted, and I believe you won't have the troubles I had with them.

MOST expensive. Although most premium brand 235/45/17 are in the £85-£90 mark (fitted).

Prices over the phone different then?  :-\

I'm struggling to see any decent brands cheapish for 17's

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3's are on MyTyres for £81 a corner delivered.

Black Circles would do Goodyear AS2's for £85 fitted on Elite rims.

Midrange tyre at premium price. Though I doubt you'll overdrive them in 2.2.  Mid range grip levels, pronounced tramline when part worn.

I'm tempted to put old Elite alloys with KU39's on the 2.2 and treat the 3.2 to new boots instead, as they also need replacing soon and are just crap.
