Welding
« on: 08 April 2016, 19:39:49 »

I've discovered a hole in the sill of my miggy. :(

Does anyone know how much a garage would be likely to charge to repair it by welding a new piece of steel in? I would estimate that the piece would be about 6cm by 4cm. I realise that garage charges vary a lot just an estimate would be helpful.

Many thanks. :y

Cutting a flat piece that size and welding it to another flat piece is about 10 minutes work. But that rarely happens on cars, especially when doing rust repairs! The rust is ALWAYS worse than it looks. And then there is the location to consider; is there any trim or wiring in the vicinity? It has to be moved unless you want to set the car alight, or explain to the customer why nothing at the back of the car no longer works. And then there's the quality of the job; a quick patch for a couple of year's worth of MOTs is a lot less work than an invisible repair!

So, rant off, you need to provide more information!

Matrix leaking, sunroof drains, door seals, living in a salt laden environment... I could go on... Not sure that's the diesel Omega recently purchased as the tester would have picked up on it in a heartbeat... Not sure I would be brave enough to Jack a car that bad, let alone put it on axle stands :o

I imagine that's not the only rust on the car. Could be time to seek a better Omega on e-bay or elsewhere. Last year my Opel 2.5 n/s rear shock burst through into the boot due to rust. Might have been repairable, but probably sign of a generally rusty 15 year old car. I bought  a 2.5 CDX manual Omega for £257 and scrapped the rusty one.

Try not to buy another rusty one. Look at the rear wheel arches in the pics.
