Combi boilers
« on: 15 April 2016, 20:06:16 »

Been down to the new house to check stuff out, didn't like the thought of a combi boiler supplying such a large house with nine rads. It's a Vaillant ecotech (numbers???) 35Kw. I needn't have worried. Water gets red hot in no time and, after I had the heating on for 15 mins, all rads hot.  :y

Got 17 radiators in my house, 4 of which are doubles. Some are 30+ years old, but these retain the heat a lot longer than the newer ones in the house, maybe due to them being in a thicker gauge metal? All powered by a 15 year old Worcester Bosch 35CDi combi boiler. Been excellent - no reason to change at the moment - definitely have another Worcester, although new ones are now only condensing boilers and maybe the quality is perhaps not as good?

Ours is Worcester and the same sort of spec a johnny's, although only 2 yrs old.

My only concern with combis is the level of hot water they can provide. Ours runs any 2 taps just fine but tends to struggle if you want to run a hot shower and anything else. It's not the boiler as such that's the issue, it's that it's all running off the pressure of your mains.

If you have several bathrooms/ensuites, I think running at least one off a separate gravity tank is a good move, that way you can run 2 showers at once no problems. Ours fell over running 2 showers at once (one from boiler and a cold only electric shower), hence we moved one onto a tank.

A lot of houses I've been in have been fitted with the very minimum they could get away with consequently whilst running the hot in the kitchen and someone turns the bathroom hot on it just can't cope.

Yup. Where I lived before was like that. But even the high flow ones like the one we have struggle unless your mains pressure and flow rate is tip top. Which in most areas it isn't, certainly not at peak times.

Had a Worcester combi boiler installed last year, been absolutely brilliant first time in years all the rads heating properly. The plumber who installed it will only use Worcester no problems with them so saves him being called back for complaints etc.

We've nowhere to put a tank, so totally reliant on the boiler. But the pressure is great and the boiler copes admirably with it. (He says, after a fifteen minute test in relatively warm weather)

Probably the 835 .....gives 35kw for central heating and approx. 21kw for hot water. Mines the 831 and works well with 8 rads and plenty of hot water (high water pressure)
It would be worth checking that the boiler has had an annual service (you should have a Vaillant service book) and if it has, phone up Vaillant to check the warranty on the boiler. Vaillant  increased their warranties to 5 and 7 years, altho all the literature says 2 years, so worth a phone call  :y

It is the 835, Dave, gas safety check done last month as is required when selling your house.  :y
