Does my satnav record my speed?
« on: 16 April 2016, 13:59:33 »

Article in the Telegraph 15Ap16 p10, coroner's inquest report of a fatal crash, says 'Ms Reason, a manager at a karting track, was travelling at up to 102mph when her Audi hit a lorry that was stationary on the wrong side of the road as it attempted to do a U-turn.' It does not state how this speed was determined. I have long suspected that satnavs record data  Do they?

No.

The speed will have been calculated from a number of factors, including the vehicle weights, damage caused, how much the vehicles moved - particularly the stationary one, the friction of the road surface etc. This is why you see the investigators taking lots of measurements as to where the vehicles end up and where they started from. This takes a lot of time, especially when there is more than vehicle involved, and is why roads are closed for so long after fatal crashes(they are not accidents!).

There is another simpler way that sometimes works: the speedo needle might be stuck!

Some modern SatNavs will effectively record a journey, in its simplest form it does it the learn 'Driver Behavior', ie you deviate off the SatNavs planed journey, do this a few times and the unit wil learn from this, other Satnav's will store the Journey history, or waypoints and store them in a Data Form or sometimes a user Spread Sheet export file.

The one in the Mig ie, NCDC,  doesn't record or store any usable data.

Any Satnav that stores 'tracks' will store enough information to calculate vehicle speed.
