I can't see why, if you don't insure it how can you take it for an MoT if needed.

But not the other way around, cant have valid Tax without Insurance.

How SORN works

There is no need to tax and insure a vehicle that you keep on private land and never take on public roads.

But you can’t just decide to leave your car in the garage and stop paying tax on it without informing the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Association (DVLA).

You must register the vehicle as off road by sending in a completed SORN.

As all vehicles registered in the UK must now be continuously insured, sending a SORN to the DVLA is also the only way to legally avoid paying to insure it.

Am currently trying to re-insure 2 of my 3 omega's.

The 2.2 is my daily driver,

the 2.5 has been sorn for quite a while as is uninsured, whilst the 3.0 has been fully insured and SORN for a while whilst I have been contemplating whether to have it repaired or not which will require insure for me to move it.

Now some desk clerk has stuck his ore in and is causing problems by telling me I cant insure a SORN car . . .the debate continues.

Cant see why they are argueing the point, they are takeing money without a major risk of payout.

£400.81 for 12 moths for 2 cars or £300 for 1 car, would rather pay the extra £100 (£2 a week) and have the choice to fix my Elite when it suits.

Well your 'desk clerk' is wrong.

Loads of insurance companies insure cars that are SORN and have special polices that are cheaper (i.e. Laid up policies or Fire & theft only) especially for classics. If you don't tell the DVLA that its untaxed (SORN) that's when you have problems. If its taxed it has to be insured, if its off road it has to be SORN. Up to you whether you keep the insurance running or not.

Think of it this way if your car is actually SORN, how in the world can you apply for tax if its 'not insured' The post office or t'interweb won't do it for ya because the 1st thing they look at is the database to see if a) its MOT'd & b) if its Insured.
