P0234 Ford Focus TDI turbo overboost
« on: 30 May 2016, 19:14:10 »

Evening chaps. My mate has this code come up. Cars running absolutely fine but CEL illuminated.

What's the waste gate set up on these?

Ps it's a 1.6 td of 2010 vintage 😀

Would this not be a variable vane turbo like the earlier ones?
As already said I would be checking the boost sensor, live data should show up a problem. Often will show up a difference in readings between atmospheric and boost pressure with the engine off but not always.

Thanks guys will clean boost sensor. I've not much experience with live data. So I'm looking for map pressure when off. This will confirm sensors reading wrong?

If the turbo is anything like the one on our 1.9tdi galaxy then the vanes that control the boost will be caked up with a mixture of carbon and rust :(

That does not tend to happen as much on the later ones, I suspect the regen cycle for the DPF burns the soot off.

What does happen is the boost sensor gets cruded up and does not respond very fast.

Other issue of course with thses lumps is total turbo failure and an appetite for injectors  :(

Cheers chaps. Any idea where it's located? The boost sensor that is. And presumably it works like a MAp sensor??

I've cleared the code and it's not come back on yet

Not sure where the sensor is on the later model, should be somewhere between turbo and inlet. With engine off the boost and atmospheric pressure should read the same, at idle boost pressure will drop slightly normally as the inlet is under a slight vacuum as the turbo isn't boosting. There is often a reading for requested boost pressure to give you an idea of what the reading should be through the revs and although it won't match exactly, boost pressure should follow roughly and be a fairly smooth graph.

Thanks Al, I'm going to be honest that's quite complicated for a man who is only interested of late in doing servicing, brakes, tyres etc of late  ;D but I'll run some live data and see what I can see. Cheers mate  :y
