A few weeks back I carelessly 'lost' my daughter's wireless conection to the internet via an Orange Livebox-1330. The only thing I could put it down to was removal of power when I was decorating ie removing sockets. As daughter was mostly at uni at the time it was something that could be lived with until I (or someone who knew what they were doing   ) could sort it.
Today I've brought home a replacement Dell laptop for her (problem with charging on her old Gateway) and I can't make it 'talk' to the internet.
I can get as far as the screen asking me for the keycode from the bottom of the modem (how do I tell a zero from an Oscar?), it can see it, as it can the Sky box from next door - signal is apparently strong. However I then get the message that "Windows cannot connect to Livebox-1330 due to an unknown error"
HELP!!!!

Might sound daft .. but check your windows firewall settings, and any other firewall you may have running .

The windows one in particular is a pig .. it doesn't tell you its blocking things. As a small test, disable all firewalls, try and connect .. if it does then its a firewall config problem ..

I had a bit of bother setting up my mates orange livebox.  All you need to do is reset it.  Look at the front of the livebox there should be 2 buttons there - "1" and "2".  Press and hold down the button marked "1", it will then reset.  The WAP security key is a numeric "0" not an "o".

I'd seen reference to the two buttons before, but couldn't find it again.
Do I need the spaces in the code? Or do I just enter all in one block?

  Still no wireless.

Enter it in one block, no spaces (make sure it's the WPA key you're entering.  The buttons aren't on the back of it like every other router on the planet!  On one of the sides there is a cutaway with two buttons - press and hold the button marked "1".

Think it's capitols as well so try with Caps lock on.

It's marked up as 'security code' & there are 26 digits in it. When I press button 1, how long, should something happen, buzz, light? Nothing seems to happen when I've pressed it for 10/15 secs

Think it's capitols as well so try with Caps lock on.

Tried it. You have the option of seeing the characters you're putting in rather than just a start or dot.

Looks like I might be on the phone to some Orange Indian in the morning.

I would imagine 10/15 seconds is enough.  You could always try button 2 (won't do any harm I pressed both at the time), my memory has no doubt let me down once again!  That's the correct key you've entered.  

Just thought of another possibility and one that's very likely...

The new laptop may only accept WEP keys like mine.  I know for a fact your router is set up as default for a WPA key.  

First try resetting it with the number "2" button I would expect the lights to turn off, then back on when it resets.  Then enter the key with capitols first - if that doesn't work try it without the capitols.  

See if that works first if not we'll try to set it up with a WEP key.

Do you have a ethernet cable?  Can you get online with that plugged in?  If so, you need to change the routers security method to WEP not WPA (set as default).  What model of Dell laptop is it?

The only cable I have is the one I'm using now!

Try this...

Type 192.168.1.1 to bring up the router settings.
Once at the settings screen click
Configuration>Advanced>Wireless
Select WEP security only and see if that gets you on.
