Breakdown recovery in France?
« on: 02 August 2016, 21:29:42 »

Off to see some friends in France soon in the battlebus.

What recommendations do people have for breakdown cover?

I have AA membership but I assume it will be of no help once we leave the UK :-\

ADAC are brilliant. A simple "Entschuldigung, ich sprechen nicht gut Deutsch - sprechen sie Englisch bitte" works wonders when you ring them.

You need to ask for ADAC Plus cover, as you'll be outside the fatherland.

Also includes AA cover with RTC recovery - we pay 109EU for the pair of us.

We renewed our Green Flag cover today, and although the R8 and the Kia are covered, the Omegas won't be covered next year as they will be on the 16 year cut off.Has anyone come across this rule with any of the other providers? and does anyone know of a company that covers cars of any age?Going to be a bummer if I can't get them included next year ::)

When I did the Mother in Laws insurance we went with AXA and their European cover has no age limits :y

I add Europe to my RAC cover if and when I go. Never had to use it so can't comment on quality. One thing to watch is value of car against recovery to UK cost if it really goes pop. They may just pay you the value and scrap it.

I use https://www.rescuemycar.com/breakdown/european-breakdown/ - £35.

I looked into ADAC, and had some queries that I had to ask them, and following the responses, would be very wary using them. Repatriation was a problem with them, and UK breakdowns they said most likely wouldn't be covered at all.

Having had a repatriation before, your in a whirlwind of shit if you're not covered.

Has same issue as most of ones I looked at, lifted from above site:

Our UK memberships provide cover for vehicles up to and including 25 years old, our European memberships cover vehicles up to and including 16 years old.

But what "cover"?  When I asked them, they would not repatriate, and in the UK, it'd be a tow to local garage.  The wording was a little ambiguous, hence I contacted them before (not) taking out cover.

I use https://www.rescuemycar.com/breakdown/european-breakdown/ - £35.

good company and I use them for national recovery.  however there is a worrying clause and it's not under exclusions it is under "General Cover Conditions"

"If the Vehicle is beyond economical repair We have the option to offer the Market Value of the Vehicle to You and pay for alternative transport Home. "

so an £800 repair bill and most cars here could be abandoned on the spot.  i hope they would not do that but i worry they might be tempted if the recovery costs are high.  what business of theirs is the repair cost if you have decided to pay it? perhaps it is because the higher the repair cost the more likely it is to go beyond the 48 hour repair window triggering a repatriation.
