This morning my chiropodist told me her Smart car engine is making am awful rattling noise, and a dealer tells her it's because the early versions did not have sump drain plugs, so oil changes were by suction through the dip stick hole. Is this right?

That's right. You use a Pela oiler sucker up-erer ..... not sure what connection is with a rattling engine though

It's not uncommon.
Nor is it a good idea, especially as the car ages and has a number of oil changes. Although it's probably good enough for the rest of a Smart engine's poor durability.

Not having any provision for a dipstick is becoming common, and that is a truly stupid thing to do.

Plenty of Roadsters with 100k plus on the clock. If you stick to the service intervals they're as good as any other car. I'd to remove a sump, so obviously emptied it first using a Pela ..... there was sod all left in there as proved by the removal of the sump.

Is it that there is no provision for a dip stick at all. Many Mercs are equipped with an electronic means of checking the level, but there is still a temporary dip stick available

  Not sure what you mean by that  Easy peasy sucking the oil out via the dipstick tube, saves crawling under the car and removing covers etc

ive used this on a few cars now - electric pump not peli one mind. its not quicker than draining but a lot less messy.   often i undo the sump plug afterwards just to check and haven't had a drop come out.  i do spend a bit of time moving the suction tube around and up and down though.
