Got the bits, 15mm end stops, jubbly clips, etc... I've already pulled the fuse, as the noise was making people thing she was a diesel.  8)

My question is - if you've already pulled the fuse do you still need to leave the solenoid plugged in to keep the ECU happy?

Surely as the thing's unplugged can't it be totally removed? Or perhaps a little 'SAI cheater' could be made up, like something that bridges two terminals on the plug, maybe, or something to similar effect? Or what if I do just leave it unplugged - aside from a fault code being kicked up (which I don't massively care about, I don't exactly go reading my fault codes of an evening over a sherry) what else is the issue/bother?

When I changed the headgaskets 2.5 years ago, I upgraded to the later exhaust manifolds. These have no provision for either EGR or SAI.


Now, it looks like this:





The only remaining part of the SAI is the solenoid on a trimmed bracket, everything else was fitted in the bin:





Looking at that photo I could remove the vacuum pipe completely, and block it off at the other end. That would be even tidier. A job for tomorrow.


I kept the EGR valve, but made a bung to block it off as that was easier than cutting a plate for the same job:





Every time I look at this I think I should build an EGR cheater, which would allow me to remove the bulky valve.

In a weird kind of way, I do like the sound of the SAI, and keeps me happy knowing things are running as designed. I always used to wonder why the Omegas and my Vectra 2.5 made that noise, and since I found out and understood what its function was, maybe that made it even more noticeable. Usually about 2 - 3 minutes in the summer, and longer in the winter?

It works for me, it might be noisy - is that the only reason some people remove them?  :o :o

James, you shock me! Thought you knew your Omegas better than that!  :)As Mr Anhillator says, it pumps a bit of exhaust gas back in the induction, perhaps because Omegas overfuel for a few mins after startup.

To Tick Tock, I'm all for originality, but I think the 'negativity' against the SAI is because its something that doesnt really do anything. It starts up, is another area where vac leaks may occur, some more hoses which will require replacing in time, and some more space taken up in an already cramped engine bay, and a few mins after startup it shuts off, never to fire up again until the next journey. And they fail and go noisy.


So....are we saying the answer is a 'no' in so far as leave the solenoid, just hide it away if I so wish? Also, Nick, I'm hoping to fit the later manifolds, but suspect that will be next summer's job. I have all the necessary parts, but will mean another weekend gone, which I cant afford any time soon, I suspect when I can the weather will be against me. Looking forward to doing it, however, as well as a nice neat blanking plate for the EGR  :y
