Lovely service- now I've got a whine/whistle
« on: 06 September 2016, 08:59:42 »

So after lavishing attention on the old girl, there's two odd little whines/whistles appeared since the service...

Whistle - Hear it in the cabin - more so on pass side? Sounds like a Clanger in a box. Yes, a whistle, high-pitched but quiet, which rises in pitch depending on revs. My theory is it's vac related. I have changed the purge valve, and no more petrol smell on startup. Fuse pulled for SAI. The front multiram has been changed too. Nothing else vac related (that I can think of) has been changed.

Whine - Fractionally audible from interior, obvious when stood next to car. Coming from the front end. Disappears under any revs, so only occurs at idle. Pulley/ belt related? Will check for anything rubbing against the aux belt, but nothing apparent with a visual inspection last night.

Well, I'm confused!  :o ???

Suppressor on back of 246 head still connected :-\

Causes a whistle directly proportional to rpm... Most apparent through radio ;)

Been digging around OOF and it looks like the suppressor would only be an issue on MW and LW radio? Fairly sure it's there all the time, radio on or not... Will check properly when I get my car back (been stolen to take her nan out today  ;))

I didn't know there was a suppressor on the head, thanks for that. I have suffered a radio whistle on fitting aftermarket plug leads, cure was to fit old Vx (presumably resistive) leads.

I have done as you suggest, but can't find anything to do with what sounds like my problem? I'll see if this noise occurs with the radio off  soon as I get my car back, and report back. No clue what the squeal from the front of the engine can be, however, that's got me confused and a bit worried. (I'm always worried)  ::)

That'll be why I couldn't remember seeing it, then!  ;D

Back to Plan A, then... something vac related? in my head I'd say it's a whine coming from the new (well, second hand) purge valve. But I'm loathe to swap it back as the interior doesn't smell of petrol anymore for 5 minds after startup!  :D
