wifes mishap
« on: 07 September 2016, 13:21:30 »

on Monday evening my wife had a fall which seemed innocuous at the time just a bloody nose. later on she was in agony & ended up at the a&e. outcome is she,s been admitted with a broken left wrist & tendon damage to her hand. the right arm has two fractures ( one quite a bad one which requires surgery ) . also this morning they are thinking her right wrist & shoulder may have damage, awaiting xrays. also I'm told before they allow her to come home a care assessment has to take place to determine if our house is suitable for a person with no arms. they also need to know if I am capable of seeing to her toilet needs & bathing etc.

Hi sorry to hear about the injuries. Must be very distessing time for you. Hope shehas a speedy recovery.

The release home process is generally very robust in our (extensive ) experience. Whilst the hospital will want to relase the bed  once your wife is in a fit state to go home, they will not want her back having fallen because of lack of handrails or similar. i would recommend getting to know the person responsible for the decision making over when she can come home. They will come and make the assessment of the home situation fiirst of course. Do discuss any concerns you may have e.g. If you have a bad back and might struggle to lift her up on your own. Resist the temptation to say we will manage. my dads neighbour did that and it tok nearly 9 months to sort out thehouse after she was back home .

Do you have other family mmbers that canhelp/ support you both?

Anyway, first things first. Speedy recovery.

Sounds nasty, they can fit all sorts of gadgets to help in the house, handrails ,raised toilet seats and might offer carers to come and help for a bit, I advise take them all. Sounds like a long recovery ahead so best wishes

Hell fire!!! that's a fair old list.Wishing her a speedy recovery. As said whilst the hospital will want her to go home asap they'll make sure things are in train for it to be safe for her to do so i.e. any mods/aids in the house that she may require, carers arranged if deemed necessary etc.
