Is it windows10 or my notebook?

Last week, it did quite a big win10 update.....like a couple of hours to do the update...which may or not be related to problem I now have... The update has changed the login screen and also the layout of the start menu (two things ive noticed)

Yesterday I noticed it doesn't completely power off when I shut it down.

I tell it to shutdown.....win10 says "shutting down" then the screen goes blank, which you would expect, but the power light on the notebook stays on and eventually go off when the batt runs flat (if Ive turned off the charger)

So, has my notebook developed a fault or is win10 now not shutting it down properly......anything I can check??

Sounds to me like its going to Sleep, rather than powering down, check the settings.

Check if each power down option is working correctly -

Press 'Windows' button + X on keyboard > Shut Down or Sign Out > (check each one in turn), Sign Out / Sleep / Hibernate / Shut Down / Restart.

Also check 'what the power Button Does' / 'Closing Lid ' etc. Right click Battery Icon > Power Options > Control Panel Home (left hand side)

It`s Windows 10, what do you expect :-X

I think it`s just Microsoft dicking about again, nothing wrong with Windows 10 until they start applying updates  :-\

I`ve had issues also this week but not the same as the OP, still probably update related though  >:(

It's Microsoft, they released a new update, this month,
They didn't or wont admit that win10 isn't a 1 shop platform, my phone thinks it's a tablet now, my sons tablet just crashed and refused to restart (Tesco refunded,no problem),
.Go and google anniversary update.
I did post couple weeks back.

The update was actually released in July, hence its name - 1607

If you use Windows Update, which most people would, it was purposely staged so that newer, more capable devices got it first, so some still haven't got it, such as my tired old netbook.

There has clearly been a change in power management, as my trusty old 2007 vintage desktop would only display a blank screen on power up (but was fine on a reboot), leading me to disable Fast Start to cure.


Disabling Fast Start sounds like a starter for 10 for you, once you have tested all the drivers are the latest version.

I should add, my desktop is a driver problem - its running a Vista driver for the shit ATI video card, but as is always the case with AMD/ATI, the drivers are piss poor, and never updated. So the fast start thing is to work around a driver flaw.

Thanks for the replies....seems I have fixed it  :)

Downloaded and installed latest ACPI driver which was released at beginning of Sept

Now turns off properly  :y
