Vodafone data leakage
« on: 10 September 2016, 21:47:23 »

Iphone 5s, I have never ever used data, and mobile data has never been swithched on. This week I decided I might need it, but when I tried to connect I always get an unable to connect error msg. After spending hours waiting for VF to phone back after telling me that I have used 15mb of data this month and that the phone has a problem, I gave up. But what I can't figure out, regardless of my 'broken' phone, is how it has used 15mb of data according to VF. They were unable to explain either. Clearly it is leaking somewhere.  >:(

Well, maybe not knowling used data. Check in settings if internet data or something similar is on or off. I don't know iPhones, but I do know that my daughter had a similar thing while back.

Many smartphones have mobile date "on" as default. Therefore just things like checking for updates (and spying on you) will use data.

Everything data related was, and is, off, so it remains a mystery. I have told VF that I am moving unless they can prove when it was used, which they have failed to do thus far.  >:(

Under the setting for mobile data look at the bottom of that page and see if wifi assist is on.

If it is that may be your problem. Also on that page it will tell you ho much mobile data each app has used

Thanks Ian, spot on.  At least now I know how it was used. Annoyed that it still can use data with mobile data off, but I don't like Apple anyway. OOF is the best place for tech info.

Thanks again.  :y :y :y

You will be surprised how much data gets shifted in the background without your knowledge, Apps sniffing data, upgrade checks, cloud back ups, Camera roll baks etc the list is endless, worth checking what boxes are ticked under various apps, WiFi only etc.

One of my Sons got hit a few months back on his 4G Plan Android phone, just over 120GB in one month of chargeable mobile data, despite him swearing he hadn't downloaded anything. Took me a while to work out what was going on, turned out to be a Camera Roll back up app to his OneDrive, wasn't OneDrive itself but another 3rd party app, a Video file about 800mb in size was being backed up to his Onedrive together with his pictures, there wasn't enough space left on the cloud account so after about 500mb of uploading the video file would crash, get rejected by Onedrive, then the app would try and upload it all over again, this action was repeated all in the background without the app being active or showing on the phone, about 8 times a day 247. worked out about just over 4gb of upload per day.  >:( >:( >:(

I normally take a Mifi on holibobs.  As everyone's stupd gayPhone, gayPad and Android wank then thinks its on wifi, it rapes the arse of the data allowance, and a gigbyte is lost in a day without anybody actually doing anything.

I dont think so, I dont even know how much I'm allowed, as I never use it. Hence my concern on being told that I had used 15mb, all now explained as being down to crApple which delights in doing things it 'thinks' I would like to do, and which I never do. >:(

Well we have a 3 MiFi 20gb a month we use in the UK. "Free roaming" in Europe. switched it on and in the first day it had used 9 gb doing something. 3 were very good about it and offered to credit it. We just want to know where it is going. Probably just being gobbled up with endless handshakes between Movistar and 3. Good thing is the IP address stays UK.
