I think I need a good slap....
« on: 14 September 2016, 20:32:14 »

Me and a mate went camping on Dartmoor last week where typically it pissed down and honked a hoolie!  ::)  I also found out that tents bought in Lidl arn't the best equipment for Dartmoor in September...  :-\  :D  ;D

Anyway on to the point of the thread....  We went in my mates Land Rover Defender 110 and because I knew where we were going I drove down there.  :)  I've since found myself perusing Defenders on ebay and the like.  :o  ::)  :-[

I'm worried.  :(  Is Land Rover enthusiasm catching?   ???  :-\

My mate has always said he'll see me owning one one day, but I think Land Rover owners are probably more eccentric than Omega owners!  ::)  :P  ;D

What should I do?  ???  :-\

........

My mate is a Land Rover specialist, he's owned many over the years and he owns a garage that specialises in 4x4's, mainly Land Rover. He used to have a Defender 90 with a Nissan truck engine in it. It went like stink and was so torquey that you could see the cab twist when he accelerated.   ::)

The problem is that wealthy people buy them new, run them for between three and five years and then PX them for another new one. The less wealthy amongst us then buy them just as they are becoming troublesome. This is why my mate is always busy.  :y

What should I do?  ???  :-\

Take the steering idler off the Omega, remove the rubber bit from the bushing and throw it away.

Presto! That "won't go in a straight line" feeling is yours for very little outlay and without the need to go welding every weekend and avoiding the smell of EP90. :y

That's a very good point Kevin.  :y

My mates Defender has a big roof rack with an awning on the side, coupled with new military style chunky tyres it felt very top heavy and wandered all over the place!  :o  ;D

I'm starting to feel better.  :D

You will need a mentally unstable border collie (one that wants to take on the whole world) to go in the back.

This is the 'must have' accessory for all deranged  Land Rover owners. :)

As somebody who has to look after the following on a (all to) regular basis:

110 Long Wheel base Defender with boxed back, tail lift and road/rail conversion - 300TDi engine and about 26k on the clock
110 Long Wheel base Defender with standard rear - 19J engine and about 140k on the clock
110 Long Wheel base Defender with cherry picker on the back - 2.5D engine and about 110k on the clock
Series 3 long wheel base LR with crew seats in the back - 2.25 petrol engine (unleaded conversion) and about 95k on the clock

My advise would be to get one ONLY if you have a need for one and no other vehicle can do the job...........if you have no need for one they are not worth the hassle, discomfort, constant issues, rot, lack of fuel efficiency, crap steering, questionable brakes, poor heating, naff ventilation, noisy transmissions, constant leaks......I could go on...

There's a Garden Contractor round here who has a battered Discovery 1 with one of these in the back!  :o  ::)  ;D

I know all this and have no need for one.  ::)  But....   ;D

Could be a good long term investment though given that they've stopped production and LR enthusiasts are an eccentric lot, so there will always be a healthy demand for the things.  :-\   :)

Even old shonky ones sell for healthy money.  :o  ;)

I desperately want one for no real reason; although a pre '66 example would get me into the super special parking at Goodwood Revival..
