Usefull program for the geeks...
« on: 28 November 2006, 22:48:53 »

Although you might already be using this, nifty program i have been using for a while.

Its called 'Synergy' - Its basically keyboard and mouse sharing over a network (wireless or wired), its cross platform and very good.

Not intending to show off, but i have 3 seperate computers here with 3 seperate screens:

Vaio Laptop 16" Screen (yes yes its a Sony)
Mac Mini - Connect to a 19" TFT
Normal PC - 15" TFT

3 seperate PC's networked.

Synergy allows you to share you keyboard and mouse from one computer to others. So you only have to use 1 set, its basically like a KVM with out the V  ;)

I have it set on my MacMini in both windows and Mac, i have my 2 other screens next to my 19" and i can take my mouse to the edge of the screen on the MacMini, and it magigally appears on my laptop screen!  :)

I go back can take it across 2 screens to my right hand side 15" which i use for iTunes!  :)

Really is nifty and its like having 3 monitors connected to one PC, although you can't drag windows between them.

As i said its cross platform too, so when i am on my mac in Mac, i can take my mouse across the screen from mac and it appears on my windows laptop, I can type in there with the keyboard, and whats really cool is i can copy and paste text from 1 pc to the other! Very handy

Link: http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/

Its a bit fiddly to get working, but easy enough any problems PM me  :y

Yeah, funny isn't it?  It's also by far the best XP machine that I've had.  Makes you wonder how many XP issues are really crap drivers from the various manufacturers.

Yeah i am megga impressed by it, its so small. But its by far the fastest thing i have, and its silent too. Must admit i use it more for windows than mac at the moment!  ;D

I was reading MacWorld magazine the other day, slightly biased towards mac but had an interesting artical.

They specced up a real beasty machine, couple TB's of disk space about 8GB's of RAM, basically a very high specification. They asked for the exact same spec from Apple and Dell.

The Apple PowerMac tower was nearly 2 grand cheaper than the dell!!!!  2 GRAND!!

After uni as my main PC and laptop age, i am sersiouly thinking of replacing it with a big Mac tower, because its by far the best machine to run Windows!

Actually I'm not surprised.  Apple starts off with a good value and a decent spec.  Dell et al get you in the door with crap at cheap prices, and then get money out of you with the upgrades to a decent spec or a higher.  Even the Macbook is very good value as a windows machine.

i did nearly get a macbook but did't really need its portable features, plus heard a few problems with the early batches shuttin down. The Mini had been out for a while and proven reliable so went for that. Best computer i ever bought!  :)

Yeah, I'm glad that I was able to avoid the issue of buying a laptop by borrowing this stinkpad.  That way I can just be happy with my mini.  Still need to buy a tft for it tho', maybe in Jan.

Anyone using RealVNC, please ensure you are using latest versions (released in summer).  There is a blindingly stupid flaw in the previous versions, which was the attack vector used in Friday's little outage.  >:(

I also used RealVNC at work, its great if you have a Gigabit network, however VNC here at home is no good really, 54g wireless network thats constantly getting hammered, we have download stats and we downloaded almost 115Gb's last month!  ::)

TD - Yep its a great program, although getting it working can be a little fiddly. Few tips:

To configure it right, use the network names of your machine in the config, so "marklaptop" is on the right of "markpc".

That will make sense when you see the config  :y

Also make sure you install the 2 extra so that it loads on boot, simple button on the menu for that...

115Gb is a bit naughty tunnie - probably related to your other post I've modified ::)

OOF only uses around 15 - 20Gb per month...

might have to mod that one too!  ::)

Trouble is we end up getting the same stuff twice really as we don't really tell each other what we download. Last month was a bit exessive, but thats cause my planning for the euro trip.
