Just heard that the new driverless cars are being tested in Milton Keynes today . All those roundabouts and TB to contend with

I don't see how driver less vehicles could ever work while there are still vehicles being driven by people especially in the twisty narrow country roads, Just imagine a narrow country road almost single track in size on a blind bend what on earth would the driver less car do if there isn't sufficient time to brake or even if there was a place to pull in to let the other car pass does the driver less car have the brains to do what would be classed as second nature / common sense to (most) humans?

One thought i had maybe if every vehicle no matter what it was required by law or something to have some form of communications device / GPS so the vehicles would know where they are etc..

Just another gimmick car manufactures are brewing up.

Only place driver less vehicles could potentially work is on a motorway / duel carriageway type roads.

Overall i think it's a daft idea. Especially in-till its well thought out just mixing driver less vehicles willy-nilly with human controlled vehicles is a disaster waiting to happen.

This particular test is Oxford University so like most* University projects has close to zero use in the real world.

He forgot to turn it off when he parked it... the car got bored and drove off, hence the bus to try and locate it

See this is what happens when you use some Micky Mouse Tech2 on Cruise Control and drive Automatics.

As for the Car, know where that will be by now, doing Black Circles at the local BP Garage.

Anyone who regularly drives in MK would understand that even a badly programmed autonomous car would be a better driver than your average MK driver

Well that is easy. The driverless car would be driving at a speed commensurate with the conditions. e.g. 10mph.

For every how will it work type problem you can conjure up there is a solution.

What you should really be worrying about is AI. ( e.g. your driverless car starts to think it is Lewis Hamilton)

Driverless cars cannot work on our roads, unless every car is one. We were travelling along a single lane, NSL road the other day, so speed limit 60. Almost everyone was doing 70 because, on a clear dry day, that's how it works. So.....would the driverless car break the speed limit to keep up with traffic, or drive at 60 (acting as unofficial lawmaker) and cause a tailback resulting in possibly unsafe overtakes? If it did travel at 70 (breaking the law) and crashed, would the passenger be able to sue the manufacturer for damages? If the driver can override these decisions manually, then what's the fickin point?
Just one example in a very simple situation. Imagine the permutations on busy town centre streets.

Driverless cars may appeal to some , but for me a definite no I still enjoy driving & the more powerful the car the better ,may not please the green brigade  but personally I really don't care .Plus I would rather put trust in my ability than a computerised machine that looks like an overgrown toy.
