Unilever /Tesco price rises?
« on: 13 October 2016, 10:42:17 »

Are Unilever right to want more money?

Are Tesco right to decline their kind offer?

Is this Unilever flexing a pro remain muscle?

Did you get cheaper products from Unilever when the £ was 1.45 euros? (or did all concerned just trouser the profit and say nothing?)

Does it matter if they go up 10% especially as Britains exports are now booming!

Ben & Gerrys, Marmite, Surf washing powder, Pot noodle....I'm tempted to say that I could live without Unilever's products.

It's Marmageddon!

Topic came up at work today .. surrounded by European importsemployees, of course, I was told "what did I expect", "of course things will cost more, the UK economy is going to collapse and everyone will be jobless soon, you don't make anything here, everything is imported" .. basically.

I can understand a price increase for those products imported, but for those produced in the Uk with ingredients sourced from the UK I find it hard to accept.  This is especially so when you consider that those UK sourced and produced products are now cheaper to sell in other countries than they were 2 weeks ago.  I think that this is more complicated than mere markets and is more related to a sour grapes over poaching good staff ::)

I could live without their products personally.  Ben and Jerrys would be the hardest to give up but as they refuse to sell 'Fairly Nuts' in the UK it would soften the blow a little  ;D

I tried to use that argument .. it was countered with "Well I'm sure you have to import the equipment to manufacture it, the staff to fix it, etc etc"

Still, better than yesterday where it was suggested anyone who voted Brexit (and anyone who votes Trump in the US) should be stripped of their right to vote on the basis of mental retardation. (I countered by comparing the person who suggested that to Hitler so.. y'know, I lost that argument automatically ;D)

The EU is pissed because they are loosing control over us and are shit scared that other EU nations will follow our lead.

The rest of the world are pissed with us because we are rocking the world financial applecart (so to speak) by doing what WE want instead of falling into line and doing as we are told.

You can expect many more little dirty little tricks like this disguised under the "oh, the value of the pound is falling ect" over the next few years  >:(

One of the issues will be the need to maintain a minimum profit margin to make a line sustainable, if this margin is measured in Euros then you have to raise the prices or remove the product from that market.

Of course the even poorer performance of the pound against the dollar is meaning higher energy and raw material prices (as even many sourced in the UK will be dollarised).

It will be interesting to see what the Tesco competitors do, they could take the hit personally in order to gain a few fractions of a percent of market share.

Its fair to say that Unilever have a huge range of brands and also supply materials to other brands and non-branded manufacturers:

I personally will struggle without my bottle of Matey and I am sure STEMO will have a rough ride without his Brylcreem and Vaseline

You need to suggest that, perhaps, they might like to bugger off back to their own place of origin if it's so bad here. They never do though....unfortunately.

Some (here) actually already are.. generally to other job roles for the same company* but based in their home countries; Spain, Poland (most of our technical hiring is now in Warsaw), Romania etc and taking their ~£30k of taxes per annum with them.

*Technically not the same company as we (like many other global corps, I imagine) have Ltd entities in each country.

Not the first time Tesco have treated a supplier like this, I'm sure. Just a big enough supplier to make the headlines this time.

Other supermarkets are available.

Other soap manufacturers are available.

Kinda hard to know who's taking the ssip in this instance, admittedly, but good luck to both of them.

There has always been bad blood between supermarkets and their suppliers.

They are like two giants squaring up to one another.

Personally I think the supermarkets have the upper hand (just) :-X

Tesco PR campaign, where they are trying to recover market share from their 2008 excessive price rises and people shopping elsewhere ever since? Always cycle past our local massive Tesco, on my way to Aldi and Lidl which are not much further and much, much cheaper, especially Aldi.
