One for Jason

What is the correct position on dealing with motorway closure signs. 3 lanes of m25 were going down to 1. The overhead gantry lights first had white arrows pointing to the one open Lane and distance boards showed the distance to the roadworks. I kept going until the overhead arrows changed to red showing lanes closed and pulled into the single line of traffic. Many cars and lorries kept going in the other lanes despite the red Lane closed lights and consequently a large build up in the single line who had obeyed what I would have expected to be the rules. Needless to say no one around to police it and it would have been more efficient for them to have just left it showing single Lane and not bothered with Lane closure lights. Very frustrating for a couple of miles traffic that had built up in single Lane. Next time can I just ignore the lane closure until I get to the constriction??

Under no circumstances should you pass a red lane closure sign unless in an absolute emergency and then only to avoid an otherwise unavoidable event.

I suspect doing so constitutes the same offence as running a red light :-\

Do like all the other, rather audi- BMW and vivario drivers do, stay in the clearest lane till 0-yards and then just shoot across hoping you can get in, before a LH drive artic slams them in the cones or barrier.

It's kill or be killed out there, nobody abides by the highway code, and the chances of a traffic cop being about is nil to not a hope.

"Motorway signals Rule 258

Red flashing lights. If red lights on the overhead signals flash above your lane and a red ‘X’ is showing, you MUST NOT go beyond the signal in that lane. If red lights flash on a signal in the central reservation or at the side of the road, you MUST NOT go beyond the signal in any lane.

Laws RTA 1988 sect 36 & TSRGD regs 10 & 38
"

normally prohibitive signs are in a red circle and warning signs in a red triangle.  not so for the red x, don't know why they could easily do it.  probably just to keep us on our toes like box junctions - don't start on them even the highway code doesn't have it right.

Thanks for that - I would say a good 150 to 200 vehicles including lorries went through the red Lane closure lights. The tailback in the single line would have been 2 or 3 miles.

Same thing happened to me last Monday when the M1 was closed just north of Toddington.  White arrows showing in the outside lane, then the outside two, then the outside three and finally crosses in three of four lanes.  All of that showing since J10 (maybe J9) and finally closed (line of cones, police etc) at J12 with everyone filing off.

I moved over. Thousands didn't. It took the best part of two hours to get from J9 to J12 having missed my opportunity to escape early at J11..

Same thing again a couple of days ago southbound on the M1 - five car accident (must have very recently happened) in the outside lane so three/four gantries of white arrows followed by two of red crosses.  Nobody moved over until they could see the whites of the eyes of the people standing by the cars ::) (No exaggeration .. people would literally stop behind the last car in the shunt and then indicate)

Now, I realise we have no police left to do anything .. but given there is a speed camera on every other bloody gantry (because SPEED KILLS!) you'd think the digital cameras could be set to snap the plate of every single person going past the red cross....

But no, because speed is the only dangerous thing on the roads. </rant>

I thought they had used that camera trick in the past. I may be wrong, but I am pretty sure I either saw, or went through roadworks, where it was stated that if you were in a certain lane after a certain marker, you would have your piccy took :)
