Decorating question?
« on: 14 October 2016, 11:59:02 »

I'm decorating a house and having problems in the lounge where the emulsion was flaking and peeling.  I've scraped it back but it's coming away like sheets of wallpaper!  :(

Clearly the plaster was never sealed properly in the first place, but I'm wondering what the best course of action is now?  :-\

Should I just bite the bullet and scrap the whole lot off and start again or is there a good way of camflaging the patches where the paint is solid?  ???

TIA!  :y

Which seems to imply the only thing to do is scrape the lot off, sand the plaster to key the surface, mist coat, dry overnight, another mist coat, dry overnight and then paint..

Have fun!*

*doing the worst job in the world, painting. Rather you than me!

Hmm I was wondering if painting the edges of the solid paint with wallpaper paste might stop it peeling further.... :-\  Then several coats of thick emulsion in the bare patches to even it up.....  ::)

I love a good bodge!  ;D

No, it will look rough as a bears arse. Get it flat before you paint it. If it's going to be a ballache and time consuming to get stuff off, give it a coat of pva and skim it.

Had to do this in one of our rooms, the only successful method was to strip the paint which, as you describe, came off in sheet!

And remember to always use a flat (Matt) paint on imperfect walls, not like the git who we bought this place from. Silk vinyl doesn't half show the marks up.

No good painting round edges, Steve. Its all got to come off..or...line with a fresco and then emulsion, or a heavy duty lining paper, then emulsion.
As has been said, this usually happens when there is no sealer on the plaster, or steaming off wallpaper, with to much steam.  :(

Skimming is ok, if you are sure no more is going to come off.
To be quite frank, when I was in the business, it was the fresco or line for me, depends what time scale you have !!!!! :y

I've scraped all the flaky paint off and now have a piebald wall!  I'll leave it for a few days as I've other stuff to be getting on with and see if the remaining paint starts to flake....
