Noticed on paperwork following mot that they do not do an emissions test if you have a diesel particulate filter and also a disclaimer that the garage is not responsible for engine failure during mot tests on diesel engines. Is this usual or just this dealership.

I know that years ago when they began testing diesels they did ask you to sign a disclamer....I also remember them stop the diesel testing for a time as the belts were breaking..so i think they bought this disclaimer out because of this exact problem..

They take it up to about 4000 revs and hold it there to see if smoke starts billowing out. It's a very basic and harsh test and, I presume, many an old oil burner has coughed it's last splutter under those conditions.

I wonder what would happen if you took a car with a five year warranty to a main dealer for it's first MOT and they broke it?

They would probably find a way to weasel out of it being there fault.

All Diesels require an emissions test weather fitted with dpf or not. It's the testers responsibility to check with the presenter/driver of the vehicle that cambelt has been changed, and the to ensure oil and coolant levels are good and that the engine is not excessively noisy or smoky and the engine temp is correct 60oC min preferably 80oC.

The tester could infact refuse to test the vehicle if the cambelt hasn't been changed as per scheduled or if the engine is noisy.

If any of the above criteria isn't met the tester is unable to carry out the test and the vehicle will fail on - Emissions test could not be completed.

If the engine goes boom during the test and the checks have not been done it's the tester who is liable not the garage. So it in the tester interest to ensure all is good other wise he/she could face a hefty bill.

Thanks - it is clear the young service reception staff have not been trained. They have to confirm whether or not the dpf is present (i.e. if fitted originally it has not been removed) but they should also do emissions test. Service person was wrong in saying because dpf is fitted there is no need for emissions test.

If a DPF has been removed that is also a fail
Same goes for a cat on petrol engines

That disclaimer is worthless to the garage, should DVSA get involved in a case of an engine blowing up they wont even look at it. As I said all the responsibility is put on the tester.
