Colour Laser Printer
« on: 04 November 2016, 20:41:29 »

I am having to upgrade to a newer Laser Printer (LP) due to not having a parallel port on my PC.  Looked at a couple of Dell models to replace my cheap Xerox LP that just doesnt seem to run out of toner  (obviously due to little use)

Dell E310dw mono @ £39.99

Dell C1760NW colour @ £99.99

Both printers are USB/Wireless/Lan capable. :y

Due to most of the ink jets I buy drying up the Laser is a more suitable option, I don't print photos, but have an Epson all in one if I want to do a batch of photo's.  I do however print a lot of spread sheets, Mono LP fits the bill perfectly for this and occasionally the need to print in color would be an advantage.

Basically my question is this. When the colour toner runs out will the printer still function as a mono LP.  TIA :y

How about getting a print server?

Good idea, but not at that sort of money.  My luck the toner would run out in the Xerox and then I would still buy a new printer. :-\

My experience of my Epson C1100 is that when it runs out of any black or any colour toner is that it stops. I have always had good service from Epsom printers and had problems in comparison when using most other manufacturers except Cannon.

I've got an Epsom PHOTO 950 inkjet, but got fed up with dried ink nozzles and one of the reasons I went for the C1100 was it's excellent photo reproduction. Personally I prefer the colour output from this and being a Laser printer the prints don't run on the slightest hint of water, unlike an inkjet print.

Mrs. KW bought a Samsung C410 when she finally got fed up with the previous Epson inkjet which was permanently on life-support. ;D

Never had any bother with it and it has separate toners for each colour so printing mainly monochrome doesn't present a problem. I agree that inkjets are simply not suitable for occasional home use. When I want to print a photo I use an online service who do a much better job with far less frustration.

I'd spend a bit more if possible.

I personally use an HP Color LaserJet Pro M476dw, now been long superceded. Does everything I throw at it (except CDs - still got inkjet for that), and does a good job.  I only print around 1500 pages a year, so the 2200 page life of each colour cartridge (double for high yield black) is fine - if I printed more, I'd spend a bit more again, as the consumables get cheaper with the more you spend.

It has most things needed. Duplex, wifi and cat5, airprint, googleprint, ADF double sided scanner (scans both sides in one pass), flatbed scanner.

It was under £250 when I bought it in the summer of 2015.  And its still on its "starter" cartridges, although I do have a full set of proper cartridges waiting to go in, when the print finally fades...
