Average speed cameras.
« on: 17 November 2016, 13:50:54 »

I use a section of the A16 out of Spalding regularly since it's opening there have been numerous accidents & several fatalities, in truth it should be dual carriageway but to save money it is just single, however average speed cameras have now been installed & what a difference have seen no idiotic overtaking &  when I set my cruise to 60 mph i don't even get "tailgater's" if these are going  save lives I personally think they are a good idea. There was an article in our local rag which gave figures in other areas of Lincolnshire where they have been installed the drop in accidents is tremendous .

I could be wrong, but I recall reading somwhere that Lincs and West Wales have the two highest road death rates in the country. Lincs probably due to the long straight roads, West Wales because they're just plain nutters.

Surely 'Average Speed' cameras do not stop you going over the limit, but work on a basis, (when you know the distance between said cameras) of say, doing 55mph for two minutes, 45mph for two minutes gives the average of 50mph.
Or am I living on a parallel universe, and talking out of my arris  :y

That's correct  :y (A fact that seems to have escaped the people who use the motorways littered with them, I think!)

Which is why I'll probably be OK.. I'd worry less if I knew whether the yellow camera I did see was the first or second in a pair  ;D

I could be wrong but believe from a good source they are still on test mode until next week, they go live then, so no tickets at present.

yes indeed, very high death rate, basically because Lincs consists of dead straight roads, followed by hairpin bends (following around the edges of fields, basically.) and around the odd bend you find a tractor doing 3mph, and some bloke in a GTi overtaking it, barrelling toward you at 80mph.... hence the death toll.  :)

They've 'cleaned up' to a large degree, installed lots of small 50 zones in what is otherwise national speed limit.... which means keep a sharp eye for the few-hundred-yard-long 50 zones, otherwise Mr NIP will come a-calling.

Average speed cameras, yes, better implementation than the other type.  :)

They help with road-flow as well, since the upgrade work to make the M3 'Smart' began, they put these average cameras as well. Previously it was 20mph->70->80->40->10->50->0mph type speeds.

Now it just flows constant, only issue if there is a break down.

I've always said they should put a picnic area before each camera. Tiredness kills, after all. Said it on one of those pointless signs big brother has been installing everywhere. ::)

I was a bit sceptical about those average speed cameras on motorway construction...thought a bit of snake oil and billy bullshit....not anymore,I now know someone who has not only been done once, but before he got the first ticket through his door he picked up a second one, so he's now getting close to a ban as he already had three points for speeding...he also now believes those cameras are for real :)

I worked with someone who insisted that changing lanes between the cameras meant that they didn't work. We suggested that not even a money-making government organisation would be incompetent to install such an easily bypassed system.
3 speeding fines in 3 days(all on his way home) convinced him that we were right
