Another plumbing question
« on: 07 December 2016, 17:26:08 »

Probably about 2 years ago I had a dripping cold water tap in the kitchen.....so I did what I usually do....nothing  ;D

About a year later its getting to the point where hardly any water was coming out of it and still dripping  ::)

So I went to local hardware store and got a tap washer and changed it   :y

But they obviously don't make tap washers like they used to or I did something wrong when I changed it, as its now dripping again, a year after changing it   >:(

So, I just changed it, old one out, new one in. Are you suppose to add petroleum jelly or summat like on the washer before fitting?  :-\

Might change it again tomorrow if I get time, but would like to know if I did summat wrong last time  :)

Most washers, esp from local shops, are shite these days. That's why you can get a paper bag full for 50p.

Beg, borrow or actually buy a seat cutter to smooth the seating surfaces. If they are rough then that is why your washers are short-lived because they fail to form a proper seal.
No point in using grease on the washer, it will soon wash away and really not nice if the tap is for drinking water!
If that sails, swap the tap(s) for those nice 1/4 turn taps with ceramic inserts and forget ever needing to be a plumber again..... 8)

Probably right Steve.....tho I bought a small plastic bag of assorted washers for about £3 iirc as I didn't know what size I needed at the time

When we moved in, I had to change the ceramic cartridges in our kitchen taps to stop them dripping  ;D They do fail, Ron.

Well, I suppose everything fails eventually, STEMO, but they do seem long-lived. The only problem I've heard of with them isn't actually wear, as with rubber or fibre washers, but grit or limescale impeding the action of the ceramic discs if your water supply is hard/chalky.

I got fed up with changing washers so I fitted these ceramic cartridges instead of the original innards in our bathroom taps.
