Seen a couple of news reports today which said that Police officers will need to have a degree before being  let loose on the criminal fraternity.
Why ffs ?

Exactly the same in most public services now, in my day common sense & the ability to talk to people were the best skills.

Arghhhhh . . . . . I can feel a rant coming on . . . . . here we go

One of Tony Bliars big things was "Education", all youngsters should be encouraged to go to University. Secondary schools were given financial incentives to get their pupils to uni, the student loans system was set up. Educational establishments that used to be Colleges or Polytechnics suddenly became Universities, and the range of courses available exploded to include some of the most banal and stupid subjects imaginable.

All fairly laudable, except that Bliars real motive was to reduce youth unemployment figures and shift the financial burden to parents and the anticipated future incomes of students.

The result is that we have a couple of generations of students with huge debts resulting from their education, along with quite a few parents who coughed up money they could not afford. Loads of ex-students with degrees in subjects that they will never use. And, coming back to the point, a degree has pretty much replaced GCSEs and A Levels as an educational indicator.

It's not all bad, shovelling the kids off to Uni is a great life experience for them (just think of all that boozing and shagging!), and also it gets them out of the home. I know that after an initial "empty nest" we started getting our lives back again !

Anyway, coppers with degrees ? Well yes, you probably need one to work in Poundland these days

Not finished yet . . . . . . . and another thing

While our kids are all at "Uni" doing their degree in Nail Bar Technology or the Musical Theory of Rap, who's doing the apprenticeships learning how to be plumbers, carpenters, electricians etc ?  Ah yes, probably the Polish.

When I lived i London getting work done was easy, you call a number, a young Polish guy comes along, gives you a price, starts work almost immediately, job done, a GOOD job done, quickly and cheaply.

Down here you wait ages for someone to come along, they hum and hah telling how busy they are and what a hard job it is. Many don't bother to give you a price they just expect you to pay whatever they charge, and then they start work some weeks later (MAY start work some weeks later), and then you never know when they are going to actually turn up. If there are any Polish tradespeople reading this, please come down here !

Some days I do find myself wondering if I missed out by not going to Uni (dropped out of my A-levels half way through, went out and got a job in IT, 20 years later I'm doing alright for myself..) - but when I think about it, that's mostly because of the highlighted part

Customs and Excise are exactly the same 

About 10 years ago, I was talking to one of my customers (who just happened to be the head of imports / exports on one of Hulls docks) about joining up when he told me about this 
Apparently, it doesn't even matter what degree you have in a lot of cases because it is supposed to mean you are capable of learning 

So you can be as think as pig shit BUT if you have a degree in Facebook, Play Station, Media Studies or Needle Work which is a favourite, you are classed as suitable

Hey Doc  mabe you can pull some strings for a pretty trainee midwife we have in the family.

The training regime is bonkers for this girl & I wonder if she can complete the 3 year course
The only payment she receives is a small bursery each year that covers the cost of books
She works 3 X 12 hour shifts per week at the local maternity ward unpaid.
There are sometimes 1 or 2 days a week classroom work & the Uni course expect tons of homework to be crammed on top. I assumed she could claim travel expences  but no 
Thankfully the bank of Mum & Dad are available to help

There is shortage of midwifes in this country I wonder why

New Labour devalued the degree to such an extent that its a requirement for any job now if you have limited experience in a given field.

I think skipping the degree thing helped me - straight from A levels, left home, got a job, and was solo on property ladder by time I was 21.
