I've just been called by the AA.  They were offering an extended warranty for my Mondeo.  I said I didn't have a Mondeo any more, and my current vehicle wouldn't be eligible, as it's 9 years old.  They said they will offer the warranty for cars up to 15 years old.  It covers failure of all major components, and pays for parts and labour, and provides a hire car in the event that the car is off the road for more than 8 hours.  There's a £50 excess, and they won't pay more for any single repair than the actual value of the car - which limits things a bit, I suppose.

All this costs just £18.34 per month, which seems very reasonable too me.  Additionally, they'll give me the full AA breakdown cover (roadside, home start, Relay plus) for a further £2.33 per month, which is a bit better than the £130 I'm paying for it now.

I think this is a good deal, as I can't do my own repairs, even with help from the OOF.  I've got two weeks to make up my mind.

I would ask for a copy of the terms and conditions first ;)

they're targetting people who have newly accquired vehicles by the sound of it, they rang my girlfriend and offered her warranty on her "new golf" and rudely hung up the phone on her when she told them it was 18 years old

Hmm, that sound good, my gearbox might be on the way out, and I can always cancel afterwards  ;) ;)

Unless you know the car is likely to break down soon in a major way, its just another way of extracting £240/year from you. Modern cars are a lot more reliable than their older counterparts.

As with a lot of these after market warranties always double check the small print and terms and conditions.

Small print....there will be clauses about servicing (dealer or AA) and wear and tear items.

Might also be maximum payouts (its not unusual to see 200 quid on engine bits) which does not cover much

You can be assured of this - I always read the small print.  

While I have an excellent local garage that can fix almost anything, and only charges £32 ph for labour, some problems with the Omega have defeated them.  It took them a long time to find the rocker cover gasket problem that caused the oil leak last year - before I found OOF, incidentally.  And they never solved the climate control problem either.  So the chance to get such jobs done for "free" looks good to me.  The restrictions are that it has to be repaired by an AA approved garage, and the cost per claim doesn't exceed the value of the car.

And don't forget, although this comes to £250 pa, I'd have to pay about £130 for my full roadside cover, so this will only really cost me £10 pm.

I haven't got the documentation through yet, but it still looks like a good deal.

I'm sure there will be limits as to who can do the work, the warranty that came with my car would only pay out if you took your car to a VAT registered garage which is fine but to be honest, there's more Omega knowledge and experience here than any garage.

Incidently the one thing that it didn't cover was Catalytic Converters..... bit of a pain that as my pre-cat's are kaputt!

The Documentation arrived.  I read the small print.  I phoned up and cancelled it.

Absolutely blatant mis-selling.  

  • the maximum payout for any repair is £1500 which is utterly irrelevant because...
  • the maximum payout for all repairs during the lifetime of the policy (24 months) is the retail value of the car - according to Glass's, that's about £350
  • do the sums - it won't even pay out for a relative small repair
  • the total premiums over 24 months come to £498.99
  • the roadside cover is for the car, not the driver - any vehicle you are in is the usual cover with the AA
  • the roadside cover is for is for 12 months only - I'd have to renew at a much higher price halfway through.
If it wasn't for the fact that I'm off on holiday tomorrow and thus very busy right now, I'd complain to the regulatory authority, the FSA.  I may still do that when I get back! >:(
