Who's binning Sky

In response, a Sky spokesperson said: "Despite our best efforts to reach a sensible agreement, we, like many other platforms and broadcasters across Europe, have found the price expectations for the Discovery portfolio to be completely unrealistic.
"Sky has a strong track record of understanding the value of the content we acquire on behalf of our customers, and as a result we've taken the decision not to renew this contract on the terms offered[/highlight].

We will be binning the sky box as we watch the discovery channels mostly  :( Bet BT are rubbing their hands  ::)

Surely sky will lose more money in customers going elsewhere , mind you isnt BT getting their discovery broadcasting rights from sky   :-\ So all service providers will lose discovery  :-\

And the movies are dire, so its becoming more and more just for Sport.  Not that other pay TV providers are much better, including the streaming providers like the god awful Amazon Prime.

All major UK pay tv broadcasters make their own contracts with the content providers. And with multiple, viable pay tv providers sky as Sky, BT, Whorehouse, Evil Everywhere and VM, each vying for exclusive content deals, bidding goes up, so subscriptions have to go up, and you get less for it.

As I mostly am interested in films, I gave up (mostly - I do occasionally wobble and subscribe to some services) my Sky years ago, and put the £20pm (that's how long ago it was!) towards DVDs instead.

The streaming providers aren't much cop for films either, as most of the "new" stuff they are putting on now, I bought on DVD 6 months ago...   ...we were flicking through Amazon Prime last night trying to find a film, and there new release featured film was Eye in the Sky, which we bought on DVD ages ago, so ended up watching listening to Hardcore Henry, a really shite, kinda pointless film that will just make you dizzy and ill.

All confirms my long standing decision not to be arsed with any subscription entertainment, just the license fee.

I don't give a rats arse about watching the latest movies ASAP, I'll wait till they are in the bargain bucket in Tesco.

Big Game sport ? I'll go to the pub, much more enjoyable

Besides, it's all non-essential. We can survive without 24/7 entertainment. Why would I pay to watch stuff when I can waste just as much time here on OOF ?    ;)

I binned SKY a few years ago. Then under pressure from swmbo, took out a discounted package of channels / phone / broadband last year.
When the 12 months is up I'm binning them again for good. The TV channels are 99% crap and not worth a brass farthing as far as I'm concerned.

Discovery almost certain to go, our view is that we are bidding what it's worth. Discovery's ratings (on Sky) have been on a constant decline for the past decade. Sky made it's bid but Discovery, but they want more....

Discovery are playing hard ball, they threatening to pull the channels not us. If they do, they are basically throwing themselves under a train. Without Sky's viewing numbers, I don't think advertisers will be happy to pay the same fee's with a drastically reduced audience watching the channels.

Oh and you can't cancel if within contract, it's in the small print the channel line up may change.  :)

That last sentence sounded very smug, you have certainly bought in to the sky ethos. Made my mind up.

Not smug, just stating fact as title of the thread is binning Sky, simple fact is you can't do anything really if within contract.

Been employed with them for over 7 years, being on the inside gives you a different perspective.  :)

Simple answer, nope.

What Sky would have spent on the Discovery contract, will be spent on other content. There are about 100 shows now in production for Sky, there is a big drive to make our own content. It will go into funding our own similar type programs I'd imagine.

I'm  not

...... never had it ..... never wanted it. I'm always astounded by how much some people pay each month ... and then some more for the pay-per-view stuff

Droped Sky about 2 months ago, and don't miss it one bit, far too expencive for what we got. 90% of programs were of no interest to me but to get the few that I did watch, I had to have the full package. Been with them for over 20 years and yet they still charged me £63 a month, total rip off in my opinion.

But you still chose to pay it for 20 years?  :-\
