Revs surging
« on: 14 February 2017, 08:07:47 »

On the way home last night I pulled up at a road junction and I could feel a "thumping" through the steering wheel[best way I can describe it is it was like the bass on the stereo was too high]Anyway traffic quickly moved off and all was normal.A short distance later stopped at some traffic lights and same thing again, this time I had time to notice that the revs were surging between about 700 and 1,000revs[normal tickover is about 950]Car accelerates and drives as normal.Any Ideas as to what this could be?Car in question is a Mk1 Volvo V70 2.4L n/a petrol.

Is the throttle body clean and ok (I recall it being something of a weakness on these)

Will give the throttle body another clean this weekend[I did it when I first got the car as the revs were dropping to stalling point]As a quick update the car ran as normal this morning on way to work and ran as normal on way home this evening. The only thing different from yesterday morning/this morning/this evening-when all was fine-and yesterday evening-when the rev surge occurred-was that yesterday evening I had the lights turned on,and on the other occasions I was running on the DRL's,which on my car only means that with the lights turned on I get the dash back lighting where on DRL's I don't.The front DRL's are the headlamps and the rear lights are also on when running DRL's.

There you go..drive with no lights. Problem solved.

Magnetti Morelli throttle body is the problematic one. I though it was only on the MkII V70 but could be wrong?

Could have an ignition coil on the way out. Fuel pumps in the tank aren't to clever either.

Just a thought - is there enough fluid in the power steering reservoir?

Power steering fluid checked for both level and colour and both ok,must have been throwing a hissy fit as it's only done it the one trip!Got some new front pads to fit this weekend so I'll take off the auxiliary belt and check pulleys etc for any roughness and see how we go.
