Steering wheel turns hard
« on: 23 February 2017, 11:34:27 »

Hello friends

I've 1999 model 2.5 v6 automatic transmission vehicle and it has heavy steering problem. I've changed steering box and steering pump 2 times and servotronic role 3 times. Speed signal exists from ABS but the problem hasn'T been solved. At the end servotronic role has been changed again tech 2 and 6-8-9 have been programmed with 11.

Now the steering wheel is heavy like works without role. Sometimes it get better but generally heavy. I need your suggestions about solution of the problem.
Is there anyone who knows the codes with Tech2 programming?

Is it too silly to suggest that you might have a ball joint in the steering run dry?

Check your steering components. Something might siezed up (ball joints on tie-rods, central rod,  or steering idler arm).

Btw...do you have OEM idler arm? If bushing in it is replaced wirh steel sleeve, they can cause heavy steering after some time.

I think I would be inclined to remove the servotronic relay as a test. Steering should be a little heavy at parking speeds without it, but fine on the move. If there are still "tight spots" you then know it's a mechanical issue.

If the heaviness is RPM related (heavier at slow engine speeds) then it's likely the pump. If it's related to the position of the wheel (always tight at a particular position), then it's a tight ball joint, strut mount, idler or steering box.

I know you've changed the box and pump before. Are you certain they were good components?

If it's looking like the box, it might be worth slackening the adjusting screw on the top of the box 1/4 of a turn, and seeing if that helps, without introducing too much play.

Steering box, role, pump were tested in different vehicles. It works.

OK, so remove the servotronic box and check that the steering is consistently a little heavier than normal. If it is still tight at times, then you have a mechanical issue in the suspension somewhere.
