...or is it 3.14 times the radius (14 inches) rather than diameter?

My brain is starting to hurt. ::)
Circumference = 2piR = 2 x 3.14159 x radius

which is the same as piD or 3.14159 x diameter

or if you wish to be more accurate ..

3.14159265358979323846264338327950288419716939937510 x diameter

Circumference is 2Pir, so 2x(3.142x14) ;)

That was just an approximation to Pi, Nige - you need a few more decimal places for true accuracy; it goes on to infinity, apparently.
May we both live long enough..... ;D :y

This is a bit American-acised, however should work

http://www.crawlpedia.com/rpm_gear_calculator.htm

Thanks, jimmy.

The accurate parts. Final drive 2.56 and gear ratio 0.667. :y

The guesswork, Wheel and tyre 28 inches in diameter.

This combination gives me 48.8 MPH for each 1000 RPM.

"Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point. As an irrational and transcendental number, it will continue infinitely without repetition or pattern."

.. perhaps we should start counting now Ron ......  :)

Isn't it in the manual? From memory, for a 2.6 FL auto saloon in locked top it's 28 mph per 1000 rpm.

Ron.

Sounds about right, Ron.

100 MPH was slightly less than 4000 RPM in my 2.6 auto.

My Chevette HS was 18.9 mph / 1000 rpm in top gear. This could be why it only did 18mpg.  ;D

With a torquey 2.3 litre lump top gear acceleration would have been good though. :y

Well Ron, a billion has always been a thousand million when I do the maths (or should that be 'math' for our cousins from the former British colonies) ;D

That's an American billion - OURS is a million million.
There is an English term for a thousand million - a Milliard - but few people use it as it's so close to million.
Why not avoid confusion and follow scientific practice (and computing terminology) use Mega, Giga, Tera, etc?

There is no confusion, Ron, everyone uses a thousand million for a billion now.
